Defensive Woes- Is the Talent there?

I think Wommack is predictable and doesn't disguise coverages when facing a true running threat at QB. I also feel like the last drive of the game Saturday is the first time he's brought pressure while playing press man so that the Qb cant throw an uncontested slant when we blitz. He's shown that he's not able to out scheme an offense consistently, but I also think the defense just isn't as talented as what we have seen the last decade plus. I don't think there is anyone in the starting 11 on defense currently that would start on the 2016, 2017, 2011, or 2015 defenses. In modern college football, defense is pretty damn tough and I would say Michigan last year and UGA in 2021 are the last dominant defenses and we still put 41 on UGA that year with BoB as OC. It doesn't help anything that it seems like refs are looking for any possible way to keep the offense on the field as well in the name of "player safety" with how targeting and roughing the passer are called now. I think Wommack is closer to Golding than he is to a Kirby or Pruitt, but I dont think the 11 guys that start every Saturday come close to what Kirby or Pruitt had as DC at Bama.

Even Golding would coach circles around Wommack.

Coaching is the issue. This defense has more than enough talent to be much better than what they are currently. Wommack is not ready for this level of football.

There is too much talent for the defense to be this bad.
If you haven’t seen this stat, it’s a doozy: In the past decade Bama gave up 1 16+ play TD drive. They’ve given up 3 in the last month.

Exactly. We have guys like Jordan Renaud and Jaylen Mbakwe coming off the bench making plays. It’s all coaching.

Kw is struggling with playcalling to be sure, but certain position coaches aren’t doing their jobs well (aware kw has role in lb).
The lack of respect issue is glaring, but its not just on kw…it’s rampant in uaftbl.

I think we have talent in young guys, and we need to keep getting them experience for sure. I just don't think the defense as a whole is very talented, and Wommack doesnt help them at all.

When 0 and 11 are your starting ILBers then you have a big problem.
All That Talent
Recruiting rankings!

I've been saying for years that Bama needs to change its approach to player development. If you go back and look at the names of some guys who were five star recruits over the past five seasons, it is unbelievable how many were outright busts or just completely mediocre role-players. It's especially striking compared to the consistency Bama had with development in the first half of the Saban Era.
To the OP, two things can be true in this case. This defense is very young and probably on paper the least talented Bama has had in many years. That said, they are also underachieving. Not as badly as the Golding defenses that were stacked on paper and full of upperclassmen but still managed to find a game every season where they set a new school record for defensive futility, but still underachieving.

Could it be learning the scheme and not knowing the defense? Serious question. Maybe a little bit of the troubles. Guys not giving great effort because they don't know where to be.

You take the time and watch the game again and just the defensive play of Bama. You will clearly see that 0-11-15 are killing this team.
The really bad part is there is NOBODY to take those spots! Nick and staff shite the bed recruiting ILBer for 3 years.
30-35% of the Nick's recruits (each cycle) never played a meaningful down. They did take their recruiting rankings with them to their next school, and they didn't play there either.

Not sure what happened when 2020 rolled around but our evaluations took a major hit. We have a lot more busts compared to previous classes.
The defensive line continues to under produce despite finally waking up a bit on Saturday, Carolina’s line is pretty awful. You’re not allowed to be critical of Roach though.
LBs are led by vets and they’re underperforming. ILB play has been abysmal this year.
5th year Senior Safety not stepping up and leading the defense and making plays. Best DBs are transfers.
Offensively our best player is a 17 year old freshmen and then a WR from Washington last year.
We have some whiffs.

Our ILB play has been surprisingly poor so far. Even though it was in a different scheme, these are veteran players. I can understand a missed assignment every now and then, but not the poor effort. You don’t have to be talented to give effort.

Rule
If you're going to make a mistake, then make it full F speed. Neither 0-11 have ILBer instincts for the position.
If you watched LSU vs Lane K U, then you saw #40 for LSU and how he plays the position.

Freddie is a good recruiter. Maybe an average DL coach. Plenty of people away from this forum have said so ever since he’s been on staff.

Star ratings compiled by recruiting services and gurus that are looking for clicks from obsessive fans don’t tell you what is in a player’s brain, heart and gonads.

I don't completely discount star ratings, but damn, some people act like they were written on stone tablets on Mount Sinai by God's own finger.

To me it's the scheme.....UGA figures something out at halftime of that game and teams are copying it.
Secondary has played well for the most part but the blown assignments for TD's vs Vandy and USCe have been gamechanging plays and totally changes the momentum and the team is seems takes too long to recover.
The penalties are killer too.
Team is talented but they are very undisciplined right now.

True that. Give me the effort guy 10 times over a talented underachiever. This team has got a lot of Tarzans, lbs looking good, got the stars, playing like a girl.
