Greg Brooks Jr., the former LSU football player and team captain whose career ended after the discovery of a brain tumor last fall, is suing the school and its affiliated medical center for negligence. Brooks is accusing coaches of inaction and trainers of misdiagnosis as well as levying claims against the surgeon who operated on him.

The 13-page lawsuit, filed in August in East Baton Rouge Parish and obtained on Thursday by Yahoo Sports, unearths unreported details of the timeline of events last year related to Brooks’ unexpected turn of events — from a star safety in the SEC with NFL aspirations to a now “permanently disabled” man who still, a year after surgery, cannot walk.

quote:

In the legal filing, Brooks accuses the coaching staff of encouraging him to practice and play while ill by threatening his starting position, and he levies claims against team trainers for not appropriately diagnosing his condition and refusing, for weeks, to recommend him to a neurological specialist.

quote:

Along with [the surgeon, Brandon Gaynor], the lawsuit names and holds partially responsible several LSU coaching and training staff members as well as medical center doctors. The list includes head coach Brian Kelly, then-defensive coordinator Matt House, then-safeties coach Kerry Cooks, head athletic trainer Owen Stanley and team doctors Stephen Etheredge and Vincent Shaw.

Sad this is what the once proud and prestigious louisiana state university has come to under the leadership of crooked Brian. Hopefully this will be a lesson to other players to stay away from such a shady program and to stay at respectable universities like the university of Arkansas. I bet Greg wishes he’d stayed

That’s going to cut into our OLOL children’s cancer fund that we use to pay players. Selfish decision by Brooks.

“I have a headache coach”

Come on it’s stupid to think and I don’t think any court will think that a coaches mind should immediately go to “this kid might have a brain tumor” when they hear this.

He’ll get a settlement, but it’s ridiculous to blame the coaches for this kid getting dealt a bad hand in health

Yet ANOTHER victim of Brian Kelly's negligence.

I'd sue them for as much as absolutely possible. Are you kidding me?

LSU fans you don't have the right to shite talk any of us as long as BK is there.

If LSU didn’t take him seriously or do something malicious they absolutely deserve to face the consequences, but I have a hard time believing that the medical staff didn’t take him seriously. Those guys don’t take players’ health lightly.

Unfortunately it's the world we live in where you can be sued, no matter if you're at fault or not.

Hopefully things get better for Brooks but in time like these... you also gotta wonder how many times did he tell the coaching staff he was good to play.

Taken from the article:

quote:

However, on Aug. 5, during the first week of LSU’s preseason camp, Brooks experienced symptoms of nausea and dizziness and vomited at practice. He was treated with Zofran for the nausea and was cleared to return to practice. Two days later, on Aug. 7, Brooks’ symptoms increased. LSU trainers cleared Brooks of a concussion after using an electronic app on an iPad called “C3 Logix,” the complaint says. On Aug. 11, Brooks experienced more symptoms during a “rolling drill” while at practice. He was treated for “vertigo.”

Symptoms persisted over the next several weeks as the Tigers prepared for the season opener against Florida State in Orlando. Brooks was given the option to not participate in practice but was “simultaneously told by the coaching staff that if he chose to sit out, someone else would take his place, such that he may lose his starting position,” the lawsuit says.

Sounds like to me he shouldn't have even been given a choice in this matter. Most of these kids come from nothing and this is their only shot. LSU coaching staff pressured this kid onto the field despite his health. Of course if given an option he's going to want to fight for his spot.

yep shame on BK for telling a kid if he is too sick to practice, too sick to play. total of 4 weeks from start of symptoms until the time of diagnosis which is better than 99% of cases

you realize...if Arky didnt do a MRI of the brain...he is suing them next right?

your dumbass realizes this is a money grab right?

wtf you want them to do?

Apparently Brian Kelly causes brain tumors now.

Look, it's a sad situation all around and I'm sure the Brooks family is desperate for money given his medical condition, but LSU didn't create his brain tumor.

This sounds like a guy who is angry at everything he lost and is trying to find some form of justice in his mind. I don’t blame him, but I just don’t believe he was brushed off and not taken seriously. I have nothing but sympathy for Brooks. Best of luck to him.

He must have had a stroke during or after the operation. Unfortunately that is a real risk when removing a brain tumor.
