This is just an appreciation thread for how incredible this dude is playing. He’s been better than we could have hope for.

If he ain’t the SEC DPOY at the halfway point, who is?

Please...

Reword this immediately so that it's a discussion and not an invitation to flame.

How about: Who do you think are candidates for SEC DPOY so far?

Thomas is high on the list. OU’s defense has played great.

Scourton certainly is having a great season so far. Players that win these type of awards generally are on teams that finish 1 or 2 in the league, and it's too early to project that.

On the Texas defense, Jahdae Barron means a lot to his team. His versatility allows the coaches to shift around other players and he is often tasked with covering a larger area of territory than usual. But he's a safety and won't get the recognition other position players get since he doesn't rack up sacks and tackles for loss.

No idea about other SEC teams, but if any Longhorn gets end-of-season recognition, I would bet it's Colin Simmons for a defensive newcomer award.

Setting PFF's overall defensive grades in the SEC to a minimum of 150 snaps played (that's about 30 snaps a game since everyone has played 5 games at least, this is to weed out the guys who have rotated in some but not been on the field a bunch or missed a game or two due to injury) this is your Top 10 defensive players in the SEC:

1. Jared Ivey - EDGE - Ole Miss (90.4)
2. Chris Paul Jr - LB - Ole Miss (89.3)
3. Jahdae Barron - CB - Texas (88.2)
4. Vernon Broughton - DT - Texas (87.7)
5. Robert Spears-Jennings - S - Oklahoma (87.2)
6. Princely Umanmielen - EDGE - Ole Miss (86.9)
7. Keldric Faulk - EDGE - Auburn (86.5)
8. Walter Nolen - DT - Ole Miss (85.6)
9. T.J. Sanders - DT - South Carolina (84.4)
10. Michael Taafee - S - Texas (83.6)

Nic Scourton is #28 overall on this list at a very good but not elite 77.9 overall.

QUICK! Someone send this to the NFL expert scouts as they are projecting Scourton as one of the top 3 defensive picks in the draft!

PFF is not grading players to where they will be picked in the NFL draft, in case you werent aware. They are grading players on every play they play. 77.9 is very good.

Relax. Nobody takes the PFF ratings that seriously. It’s still early in the season anyway.

Whether the ranking is great or not, the overall context of the post is that there are 25 players currently playing better than him.

The dude is a stud. When he entered the portal I was really hoping Mizzou would get a shot at him, but he never got out of College Station.

And nobody actually believes this to be true.
I would put zero stock into PFF ratings at this point in the season.

Chris Paul, Jared Ivey, and Walter Nolen are having fantastic season at Ole Miss this year. Walter Nolen has been a revelation.

PFF scores are more indicative of effectiveness with some position groups than others. its especially telling for the OL and and DBs. front seven on Defense and skill players on Offense can majorly effect games with explosive plays that dont always translate to high grades.

Over the course of every single snap over every game so far. There's about 20 players around him playing about the same as him. Maybe about 10ish playing notably better. Again across every single snap in every single facet of the game.

People tend to forget about this. They arent just grading your worst and best plays and thats the only things people ever think about when they think about a player. It's the other 80% of snaps you arent really remembering, just the 20% extremes. You also only probably watch your team every single game and not every one else every single game, so we will have our inherit built in biases.

#28 is also out of 186 qualified defensive SEC players in that list so that's in the top 15% or so which is very good.

Thanks. I was just trying to get the thread back on topic, as we were discussing the favorites for SEC Def POY.
