The quick fix for our defense is to just be recklessly aggressive

I've mentioned that the big "easy" fix is to clean up the penalties. You can be bad but don't be bad and stupid.

But if we're talking about scheme, I've mulled on it today and I think the solution is to be like Joe Lee Dunn, Manny Diaz, or Todd Grantham. Be aggressive af: we're either getting sacks, strips, picks, or giving up long touchdowns.

If this defense is typically going to give up a touchdown no matter what, it'd be better than they do it in 4-5 plays and get our good unit back on the field than doing it in 15 plays and pissing away half the quarter.

It sucks that we're at this point on defense but they need to speed teams up and hope our offense can stay ultra efficient thus causing teams to press. We can't let teams squat on the ball and turn every game into 8-10 possessions.

I actually think this is a well thought out suggestion and doubt Womack can figure it out. Hopefully he figures things out and I eat a big bowl of crow this season.

Why we never run blitzed during the game idk. Man change something up just don't sit there and take it.

1000% but I doubt Wommack is going to change. We have a bend but don't break DC

Not much “swarming” going on so far

The only swarming that I see is Wommack and DeBoer to the buffet line.

I totally agree. It’s not so much we lost, but the way we lost. To be dominated and controlled was directly out of the CNS playbook. Turn that defense loose!!!

There's been a whole lot of breaking to go with the bending the last game and a half. The ball control metrics against this defense have to be mind blowing.

The mix of allowing both long drives and explosive plays is truly a sight.

DeBoobs is going to learn that this isn’t the PAC 12 where you can just out score everyone giving up tons of points.

You’d figure they would after halftime, but I didn’t see any adjustments made. Send 6-7 every down if you have to.

I don't have the whole game, but I found a video with a lot of plays.

1st play - Campbell seems to identify the play as he points to his right which is where the ball goes. He then just sort of gets near the ball as the RB gets 4 more yards after contact. Pathetic effort.

LINK

Next play - 3rd and 5. One WR blocks both our corner and the LB (I can't tell who it is) and the RB runs out into the flat for about a 15 yard game. Sabb eventually gets there and hits the guy and then stands over him and acts like they didn't just give up 15 yards on 3rd down.

LINK

Next up is Vandy's 1st TD. Jihaad tip toes around until the ball carries runs into him at the 4 yard line and carries him into the end zone.

LINK

Next drive to Vandy. 3rd and 6. There's not much pressure of Pavia, he rolls to his right and hits the TE who is wide open despite Lawson being in the area.

LINK

Later Vandy has a 3rd and 8. They run the QB up the middle and he gets it. Vandy ran a jet sweep look to the boundary that wouldn't have worked if he had handed it off as Que would have blown him up for a loss. However, Jihaad tip toes around until the lineman gets up to him and allows Pavia to get the 1st down. He did tackle him by the facemask though.

LINK

3rd and 1 from the 2. A triple option look again. This time the RB dives, the QB reads and then a WR comes cross as the 3rd option. So not your Naval academy type triple option. It looks like Bama has this dead to rights. Nope! Too slow.

LINK

2nd and 9. 2 tight ends, 2 WRs and a single back. Pavia is in the pistol. He pulls the ball out of the RBs belly on the drive and Latham whiffs him in comic book fashion and he runs for a first down.

LINK

That's enough for me. Just a disgusting display.

You can have players in the right spot every time...but if they are wallflowers it doesn't really matter

There were a lot of 4 5 star line man pushed around....looking to get blocked

Oh, and according to imafatkid - that is the offense's fault

The offense made mistakes. Milroe didn't need to force that throw to Williams on our first possession. Williams has to prioritize maintaining firm possession on 3rd down rather than trying to make a man miss for YAC. Pritchett cannot let his QB get blindsided.

HOWEVER

I would hit the post character limit enumerating every frick up the defense had in that game. Yes, the offense is gonna have to clean it up and reevaluate play calling approach...because they're going to have to reach for 2020 offense levels of efficiency to give this team a shot to reach the big team goals. However, Alabama lost this game due to the defense. The offense would have had to been perfect for Alabama to win. If that is the caliber of execution we're talking about from college players then we're at risk of losing any game other than the cupcake left on the schedule.

If you go back to the opening game, Western Kentucky had a long drive that ate up a lot of clock. They missed a field goal in the end and the issues were masked by the offense making explosive plays to make it a rout.

I was concerned about our run defense after two air raid and a veer-n-shoot team had success with tailback runs against us. I think the bum rush on Georgia allowed us to mask that deficiency that week.

This isn’t going to be a good defense in 2024. The fundamentals aren’t there. They don’t do anything particularly well. A stud pass rusher like Dwight Freeney is what makes these bend but don’t break schemes work just well enough to be feasible. We don’t have that dude amongst our edge players.

The problem is the scheme and coaching. Not the talent. There is talent. The talent laid down and quit on Saturday though. This falls on Womack and DeBoer solely. We had no business losing to Vandy. This scheme is not a good fit and sadly, I expect transfers after the season unless we dramatically improve. This week will be a critical turning point in the DeBoer era. If things don’t improve then this thing will go south in a hurry.

Force the offense to beat you on low percentage plays. We can’t let teams just nickel and dime us down the field. Womack has to be more multiple than just continuing to play with 3-3-5 personnel in every situation. If you are getting gashed between the tackles in the run game you need to be able to pivot to a 4-3 or even 4-4- look. Our corners are left on an island anyway, if you’re going to move a safety in the box and play cover 1 or cover 0 when you haven’t recruited a player that really fits that role, you are trying to force a square peg into around hole.

Campbell- Lawson- Russaw
Overton-Smith-Keenan-Latham.

Put 7 guys in the box and live with the results.
