Get rid of the SEC championship game

Doesn’t make sense anymore with the playoffs now. Adding an extra game on top of the playoff games will only injure players and likely leave out an SEC team for the championship.

The SEC makes $$$ on that game

SEC #3 vs #6
SEC #4 vs #5
This makes more sense to me.. or something like that, preferably avoiding repeat matchups.
#1 and #2 should be pretty much guaranteed a spot.
Giving those next 2 or 3 teams an extra bullet to make their argument makes a lot of sense to me.
As an example
#1 Georgia 12-0
#2 Alabama 11-1
#3 10-2 Texas vs #6 10-2 Missouri
#4 10-2 Ole Miss vs #5 10-2 Tennessee
That should give us 4 teams pretty guaranteed.
Georgia, Alabama + 2 winners

I thought they already did?

Yes but it’s unnecessary now with no divisions.

Since when has Ole Miss had to worry about the championship game, other than the price of tickets?

It gives the #2 team a chance to earn a bye week and no team in the SECCG will be left out of the playoff if they are at least 9-3 going in.

Lose the SECCG and it takes 17 games to win it all vs 16 for everyone else.
Much better to skip, rest and be 5th seed and draw GRP of 5 for home playoff game.

As long as the CFP format is built around byes for the top four conference champions, we will have to crown a champion. Would you rather do that simply by resorting to the tie breakers? In my mind, it's one thing to rely upon the tie breakers to determine who plays in the CCG, but it would be quite another to simply give the team that wins the tie breaker a bye in the CFP.

They will eventually expand the playoffs to 16 and the conference game winners will have a true bye.

I know this was the original thought process for most, if not all of us..
But the more I look at it, I think 2 or less is the right number. It won't happen, but I listed a scenario yesterday where 6 SEC teams could finish at 11-1.
I also listed a scenario where 4 Big 12 Teams could finish 11-1.
I understand that 11-1 in the Big 12 isn't the same as 11-1 in the SEC, but once you get to 10-2 or 9-3, the argument for a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th SEC team gets weaker and weaker.

I like 14 teams for the playoff.
Top 2 Conference Champs - bye (usually B1G and SEC)
First Round
12 more teams - 3 Conference Champs + 9 at Large
Seed these 12 teams. The Top 6 host 7-12.
2nd Round
8 Teams Remain. 2 Byes + 6 1st Round Winners
Reseed these 8 teams into an 8 Team Bracket.
Play the 4 New Years Day Bowls.
Semifinals
4 Bowl Game Winners
Championship
2 Semifinals Winners
This removes the other 2 Conference Champ byes.. which could be ranked anywhere. Those teams shouldn't get a bye. It also allows 2 more deserving teams a shot to win it all. Yes, 16 teams could also accomplish this goal.

I admire Ole Miss's dedication to getting rid of the SECCG by boycotting it since 1992.

With the lawsuit settlement requiring League schools to pony up millions, there is no way the League will ever turn down the amount of money that game brings in.

Get rid of conference championship games then expand the playoffs to 16 teams.
