No link but listening to the local WJOX show this morning, Cubelic and McElroy eviscerated not just Thorne but the entire Auburn offense. Cubelic focused on the lack of strategy and scheme and said he tried to figure out what Freeze was wanting to do based on the film, but it just seemed like Freeze was calling plays out of a hat. No real identity for what the offense was wanting to accomplish. He also said that the offensive line was getting good push on run plays and Hunter was too much for the Cal defense to really handle. But as soon as he started getting momentum, we abandoned it for random pass plays.

McElroy said the film tape showed receivers loafing on almost every play. It was obvious when guys didn't think they were getting the ball because they weren't doing their job of completing their routes. They also made little effort to block on run plays. The offensive line also had major communication issues picking up blitzes or showing an understanding of the blocking schemes for pass plays.

I am one of the loudest critics of Thorne, but I think we may have a coaching problem more than a Thorne problem.

I mean if the receivers are decided at the huddle instead of during the play like they seem to be why would one want to put in the extra effort. Last week as compared to this week is a marvel to me, Freeze always seems to have one of these games we're expected to win, but lose in a baffling way like this

Hypothetical example:

A go route might be there to keep the safety back so that the underneath slant is open in the middle of the field. If the receiver doesn't sell the go route (especially if it's happening on game and on film), then the safety doesn't respect it and can disrupt the slant route.

Is this the new reality of CFB? Sign some guys and have to force it to them to keep them happy? Maybe not- but Thorne seemed locked in on guys regardless of whether they were open or not.

Some of the decision making is on Thorne though.

You look at that early 4th down play, we throw a bomb to a covered receiver, it looks like an idiotic call.

But then you see the tape, the receiver on that go route was obviously to clear out the safety.....for the crossing route that was wide open, wide open. Why on earth did Thorne throw to the decoy receiver???

Even in the tape from last week he was holding the ball too long. That one where Freeze was upset. I see why, the skinny post was wide open for a TD and Thorne held the ball too long, when he did throw it, it was easily broken up.

But again it makes you wonder if he's given a certain receiver to throw to. He doesn't even look to other guys 75% of the time.

Because that's their job. You have to sell your route or else the defense can easily key in on the real target.

Also watching that Aaron Murray video, he showed that there were routes that were being run by the RB that clearly made no sense, that's on coaching/playcalling

You don't get the offensive inadequacy we've had without a lot of things going wrong. Everyone is culpable, Thorne and freeze are not clicking at all and it's on both of them prob equally

First drive was a great mix of pass and run. Cal adjusted and blitzed, which PT never adjusted to. He would roll out of the pocket instead of stepping up and delivering a dime. I have watched two HS QBs the past few weeks with more pocket awareness than PT.

Oh it's some of both. Plenty of blame to go around.

I’d recommend anyone who wants to understand more of the specific issues to watch that video

LINK

Title isn’t really accurate. He does call Thorne out plenty, but the route design issues seem pretty inexcusable for the coaches.

Except I am not kidding. One is committed to Clemson and is an elite passing QB. We have all of this local talent and roll out PT.
