It’s absurd to say the SEC should not have expanded into Texas

I keep reading over and over the sentiment that Texas and aTm don’t belong here. Well, in the real world, this is what happens if we did not add them:
Texas and aTm, both AAU schools, join the Big Ten. Oklahoma, wanting to remain with Texas and reunite with Nebraska, gets a Big Ten invite on the condition that they make progress toward AAU membership. The revenue gap between SEC and B10 becomes substantial, 20 million or more per school. Florida, an AAU member, then joins the B10. Revenue gets even more imbalanced. UNC goes B10. In a worst case scenario, UGA, who badly wants AAU membership, potentially goes B10 in pursuit of that.
Revenue gaps are how conferences get destroyed. It’s how America and democracy won the Cold War.
We had to take Texas and aTm to keep up, and we should be glad to have them.

I don’t understand the backlash. It’s going to make the season that much more fun adding in the drama and tradition that both programs bring to the table.

SEC leadership knew this in the late 80s, and the ball was rolling for Texas and TAMU to join when the SWC died.
Texas Governor Anne Richards (Baylor) and Lt. Governor Bob Bullock (Texas Tech) fricked it up.
Because of that, SEC had to swallow Missouri 20 years later.

Totally agree. Its not like we added Cal and Arizona just to expand our market. Texas, aTm, and OU are all prime time, fun home games and great road trips. You might hate Texas, but no one is saying “Oh crud, Texas is on the schedule this year….boring.”
When you can add revenue, market, and recruiting territory enhancers that are contiguous geographically and exciting opponents, you take that opportunity 100% of the time.

Should we add Kantsas and Illinios to keep Mizzy from fleeing to the big10?

Good reasoning. As well the additions of Texas and Oklahoma give the impression of being much more deliberate and thoughtful steps. The addition of Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington to the Big10 smacks of a desperate response with laughable geographic challenges, along with a scent of “clean up on aisle 12” as someone broke a jar of Pac12 mayonnaise that the Big10 is willing to help clean up.

I would have preferred Texas join the B1G, for multiple reasons. I was hoping Texas and ND would join the B1G together. This is still fine. I am looking forward to this season.

Economically, it is logical. But it fails every other consideration.

Easier path to the championship?

As we all know, their tv market was worth the trade, fam.

We threw a life raft to the Texas schools that were drowning in that pathetic conference they were in.

I think a lot of people grew up believing that Southeastern Conference meant just that, teams from the southeast. Texas and TAM are in the southwest. Missouri is in the midwest. There were teams in the southeast, or at least more southeast than Missouri and Texas, that would have been solid additions while maintaining the integrity of the league. FSU, Clemson, UNC, and NC State would have been made more sense from a cultural and geographic point of view.
At this point the SEC and Big 10 just need to rename themselves Super Conference One and Super Conference Two. Or Death Star One and Two would work too.

for academic reasons sure....but for sports the B1G is boring as frick. I'm thrilled to be in the SEC.

Everything except the ‘Cold War’ thingy at the end..
Unless you’re saying, ‘Mr Gorbachev, tear down that wall!’ …
Is Texas? Or worser, SEC stalwarts?

I agree but there needs to be some common sense applied to scheduling. We’ve had to travel to that shithole in east Texas 3 times since they joined the SEC, but Georgia hasn’t had the pleasure once.

I can’t imagine preferring a B10 schedule as a Texas fan in an expanded playoff world. You won’t fully know what you have been missing out on all these years until a few seasons in, but you will soon understand. You got a somewhat lackluster (and easy) schedule this year with MSU, Vandy, Arky, UK, and a struggling UF on the schedule this year, but that will get better.
