He echoed many of the same sentiments that are posted on this board daily, he stated that LSU is not interested in players who are simply looking for a fat paycheck.

quote:

"We were in the market in recruiting in the transfer portal, looking for defensive linemen," Kelly said, according to WAFB's 9 Jacques Doucet. "It hasn't fared very well, quite frankly. Because we're selling something a little differently and that is: We want to recruit, we want to engage, build relationships, develop, retain, and have success.
"We're not in the market of buying players. And unfortunately, right now, that's what some guys are looking for. They want to be bought."

quote:

if you're just looking to get paid, you're looking in the wrong place," Kelly said.

The board blasts him for having the same opinions they do.

It's politics man.

If my guy does it, it's good.

If the enemy of my guy does it, it's bad.

You should know this. You engage in it as much as anyone here.

That wasn't the wisest choice of words.

Fans can say this shite out loud, dumdum. Coaches aren't supposed to.

Sure, let's all slow clap for Brian Kelly and his bullshite about culture, commitment, development, family and whatever other dumb shite every coach in this conference has some version of, on deck and ready to spew at a moment's notice..

We're all proud. Brian Kelly took a stand and asked a player to take less than market value because his selling point is that LSU is in some way, unique or special. When the truth of the matter is that they simply couldn't cough up the scratch.

Well this is Brian Kelly's Jerry Mcguire moment. Let us all just watch and see what happens next.

Two things:
1 - How does he know that $$$ is the only motivation for these players he's referring to?

2 - How can he say that $$$ wasn't Baker's only motivation?

It's a disingenuous stance.

Most people agree with it as long as it’s not Nick Saban saying it

Good for him. Though there may be short term issues, the LSU program doesn't need 'gun for hire' affecting it's brand.

Leave that to programs like 8&4

Double standard. Meager with players while
money grows on trees when he wants an assistant.
Mainly it was just a dumb thing to say out loud or it was a clumsy way to ask for more money.

The problem is not the sentiment. The problem is we know he’s full of shite:

I agree with his view of how he wants college athletics to be.

That is not how college athletics are, in 2024, though. And if you aren't playing the same game as everyone else then you are going to be left well behind.

I think LSU obviously does do NIL, but he is also probably is being honest in saying that LSU isn't going to get in bidding wars, which are pretty easy to spot these days via which teams are in the final 2-3 on guys. LSU just got unlucky that their position of need was one in which guys in the portal seem to be willing and able to get teams into bidding wars. So if you aren't willing to do that, you are going to be up shite creek in terms of acquiring talent via the portal at that position.

I do think that there are differences in how programs approach the portal with NIL money. All of us decide a rate to pay. Some are willing to pay a premium at a position of need. And some are going to overwhelm kids with premium values up front to snatch them up. I don't really think any of them is "wrong" necessarily, but the are different approaches for sure.

Think the board is hitting him because it is a well known fact LSU embraced NIL fully until it was completely understood.

LSU is the ONLY one to purchase NU Timed Square billboard time to promote LSU NIL.

LSU may not be in bidding war for a particular player but LSU is working with boosters for NIL deals. If not, there would be none.

I think he is full of shite.

And what I am in favor of is it being against the rules, not some coach grandstanding about how they are too good to do it, while actually doing it.

I think a lot of us at least partially agree with what Brian Kelly is saying, but saying this publicly doesn’t do his program any favors.

I think you grossly misunderstand the opinion of the board. The opinion of the board is that NIL and the transfer portal are ruining college sports. They have no problem with their school engaging in the practice as needed.

Kelly saying that was a stupid thing to do and will hurt his recruiting efforts. He may have said it because LSU actually has a limited NIL budget and can't afford anyone else right now.
