Duke and UNC didn't hire big names

I don't know what some people were expecting. Look at Duke and UNC hires after Coach K and Roy stepped down. But they have a history of that, going back to the guy right after Dean Smith. Coach K was a nobody and almost got fired after a couple years at Duke. Blue bloods don't always get a big name.

Both those guys were in line for those jobs though and were the expected hires.

Especially not after running off a HOF coach who took a pay cut to go coach somewhere else.

Not sure about the UNC guys, but Coach K and Jon Scheyer had really solid pedigrees. Sheyer was likely hand picked by Coach K, so that made the transition much easier.
Pope played for Pitino, so I guess maybe he’s got that going for him.

Hopefully Pope will make everyone look stupid in a few years, including me

I can tell you what I wasn't expecting. Mark fricking Pope?
frick it. Maybe he'll work out.

lol it’s crazy how people don’t realize Blue Bloods hire within the family and there is a reason for it. Take your shots all ya want but Kentucky made the right move.

Dang, for it to be your first day here you sure do seem sure of yourself.

Duke wasn’t a blue blood before coach K

Agree. What are you honestly going to do? They had 3 candidates, all very high profile, and none of them wanted to leave their current situation. With every coach making $5M plus, there's not as much incentive to move constantly. Look at Drew.
Scheyer is going good at Duke. Pope's record suggests he's a good coach. Not a huge name, but not a bad choice either. But this is the rant.
Radio interview with Jeff Sheppard this morning locally, and he and Pope were roommates, and he's super excited for the hire. I think this will ultimately work out well for both parties.

I was expecting Kalen DeBoer. He was manhandling the job in Washington and I wanted him. His track record and age made him the best candidate for the money. When I found out he was also offered 10 mil to stay put and not have to follow Coach Saban at the Gold Standard of college football and said no thanks, I was in love. It takes a lot of confidence, a little ego, and plenty of talent to hold these elite jobs down. When that guy meets this job the sky is the limit.
