w/ that, you could actually believe the players loved the school like you do

The problem with college football is fans want two things:

1. They want the absolute best players in the world to play for their team. Doesn't matter if they are from California, Alaska, or Australia. Fans will take a great player from Los Angeles who has never heard of Bear Bryant or Bo Jackson over a good player from in state.

2. They want players to have the loyalty of Captain America.

It’s hard to have both of these things. You sign mercenaries and then get your feelings hurt when you find out they don't really love you or your school as much as you want them to.

People are only as loyal as their options. The college football heroes of 30 years ago would have taken advantage of NIL and the portal too if those options had been available to them.

I agree Jefferson Pilot and Ron Franklin for sure. But, it was a tougher brand of football played by men who had a passion for the game not an NIL paycheck.

2000-2010 were the best times for college football. They has replay reviews and no targeting. Also if the ball touches the ground, it was ruled no catch.

SEC Football was never the same when Ron Franklin hung it up.

Not close.

Franklin is the greatest announcer we have ever had.

100% this.

The common baw has been completely taken out of the live game.

Back then you had a bunch of blue collar people at the game screaming their arse off.

It’s a corporate event now, those people have all been completely priced out of the game.

Back then a LSU Auburn game in Tiger Stadium was fricking wild, drinks being thrown, all of it.

It’ll never be like that again.

is music better today than 1994

It most definitely is NOT. Listen to Haddaway, Babyface, Brandy, Lisa Loeb, 4 PM, Ace Of Base, En Vogue, et al and you'll know what I mean.

Pop music of 1994: good
LSU football in 1994: miserable

LSU football 2024: fun and cool
Pop music today: disgusting

30 years ago... At UF games, you could leave the stadium at half time and come back in ... That was cool

Sounds like an overeducated college kid.
We also didn't have so many commercials, corporate-named ballparks, and too many timeouts and challenges trying to falsely increase tension in the games (though the actual goal was to maximize revenue.)

Peoples mindset was different. You will never understand, because you think the quality of the game and what is good entertainment/excitement is based on how good the players are.

As if football is just a highlight reel.

But that's your mindset, highlight reels. And that's what makes it suck as the rules keep going towards favoring the offenses for my scoring, more highlights, more ESPN time.

Well, I was still in my 40s, thirty years ago so ... college football seemed cleaner, less corrupted by money, more fan friendly. Notsomuch ESPN/Corporate control.

Nailed already. Yeah I'm an FSU fan but there was nothing like getting the day started at 12:30 with Dave Neal. It just felt like college

And THIS is going to be one of the biggest
adjustments college football fans will have to
make. It's just beginning to be felt. The wild
west circus is here.

One of two things is true: You’ve smoked a few bowls, or you need to smoke a few bowls.

“Bob Kessling here with the SEC player of the week.”

And JP would ALWAYS run late and you’d miss half the first quarter of the CBS prime time game.

Tickets were affordable, parking and tailgating on campus wasn't a luxury, two programs didn't dominate the league year after year, I didn't have to listen to ESPN garbage broadcasters as much, I got to watch Auburn play teams within driving distance instead of in Texas and Missouri, news on your team didn't require double-secret-security clearance to obtain, stadiums were filled with the sound of the crowd and marching bands instead of ear-piercing club music, club lights and jumbotrons that rival the brightness of the sun.

I also hate playoff by committee and the new era of endless free agency and two/three year coaching lifespans. But, it is what t'is.

It was far more of a pastime instead of the obsession it has become. 30 years ago people did not pay attention to recruiting like they do today. Other than the people who attended the game in person most people paid cursory attention at best, when the watched on TV they were doing other stuff and most of us listened on the radio and most of the game was background noise while we did something else. At least some of your teams games were ONLY available of the radio. There was not 3 hour pregame shows that are required watching today, games started at 1 PM most of the time so you had a morning and an afternoon to do other things. The game has become a big business and most of us are obsessed with it...witness these forums. When was the last time you spent your team's game with it on the radio while you tinkered around in the garage or changed the oil in your vehicle. I can say its been years...when it was the norm for the first 30 or so years of my 59. Now its 9 AM to 1 AM and all week long with talk radio and then after the season the portal opens and recruiting opens and spring camp opens...its timed perfectly to keep us involved 12 months out of the year.
