The only Illinois River I'm aware of runs from around Chicago to Grafton, IL where it empties into the Mississippi. Guess there's another one in Arkansas?

Indeed there is an Illinois River in Arkansas. Learned something today.

Any of the other rivers used as a metaphor for the old South?

LINK

quote:

On the surface, “Swanee” seems like a simple love song. The lyrics tell the story of a man who longs to return to his “Swanee” – a term used to describe the Suwannee River in Florida – and be reunited with his lover there.

However, the song also reflects the cultural longing for an idealized version of the South that never really existed. The lyrics paint a romanticized picture of the “barefoot days” and “happy ways” that are associated with a bygone era of Southern life.

In that sense, “Swanee” is not just a song about love but rather a yearning for a simpler time and a simpler life. It is a nostalgic tribute to the unspoiled beauty of the American South, as seen through the eyes of a man who loves and longs for it.
