Though Pollack was technically a DE and JMFJ was an OLB…didn’t they essentially play the same role?

Pollack was a 4-3 DE.
Jarvis Jones was a 3-4 OLB.
When in an even front (nickel), they essentially had the same job.
Different roles in base.

I remember Champ catching a tunnel screen and it looked like everyone else was standing still.

I loved that Champ played his own technique and thrived with it.
Screw the conventional methods. He played basketball on grass and won.

Stetson Bennett. 2 NCs says it all.

I agree with OP. GOATS.

At the time, Richard Tardits.

Good call.
The problem with the OP question is the parameter of dominant.
Roquan may be one of the most dominant at his position.
But he was not the same player October of his sophomore season as he was October of his junior season.
Does that impact his dominance?

I'm not sure I'd agree on that. Pollack never stood up pre snap and alwasy had his hand in the dirt matched up against an OT or TE. Jarvis would occasionally line up outside the DE, but was almost always standing up several yards off the LOS. He'd rush the passer (very well) or play coverage, while Pollack was almost always clogging lanes or getting after the passer (also quite well).
I wouldn't really say their positions or duties were all that similar. But yes, both very dominant.

Well, this thread is ruined now.

when he left I would have 100% agreed no questions asked. But how blessed are we that just a few years later we got Nakobe? Both guys were essentially the same player; smart as absolute shite and knew what the offense was going to do ahead of time, fast as hell, instinctual, a leader, and simply did not miss tackles. I'd have trouble picking one over another.

It is the exact same player in an even nickel front.
Neither left the field for the extra DB.
I get what you are saying when Jarvis was in an odd front. Totally different position (stand up outside linebacker).
But we played a lot of nickel. I don't see how they are different when both alignments are an even 4.

Agree to disagree. And it isn't close.
We designed the 2017 defense around Roquan. Essentially, we fed him. And he ate well.
Since then, we haven't "fed" anyone. We are a no name defense. Our best athletes spike to open up opportunities for the guy next to him. We zone blitz and put 280 pound defensive ends into shallow zones or man on the running back.
It was different for Ro. Watch the Georgia Tech game again and tell me that the defense didn't specifically feature him to be the playmaker.
