Then why did Bjork try to hire him away from UK?
Bjork and Stoops have the same agent.

They bitched out on the game in Athens that year (but made damn sure to fit in their own Senior day with the female kicker the following week).

Personally, I don't think Stoops can replicate his UK success at A&M. He actively avoids recruiting against SEC powers at UK, and relies on selling Ohio kids on playing in the SEC while staying close to home.

It's a unique situation, and Stoops has it figured out well. But A&M will be totally different. We have to go head to head against bascially every power program in the SEC West for every recruit within 500 miles of campus. Stoops built his success at UK on proactively avoiding the situation A&M lives in every day. To me it's a terrible fit, and it's much better for A&M, Stoops, and UK all three that he's staying in Lexington.

You seemed triggered by this thread. Why?

Not really. You are the one defending your wins right now. I think you’re triggered by discussion on a sports forum.

You seem to start threads and talk about Stoops a lot! Lol.

Dude I feel asleep after the LSU A&M and woke up to UK fans starting threads about my school in Scoreboard, and here. I did not draw first blood. I don’t care about your dorky coach god damn lol.

The thing that is the most confusing to me is how "awful" a lot of A&M folks seemed to think hiring Stoops would be but the same people are ecstatic at Elko?

It wasn’t a “Stoops is awful” reaction.

It was a “wtf are you doing, what happened to hiring Elko” reaction…

That does make some sense - appreciate the response.

I get that maybe they think Elko has a higher ceiling (based on what exactly I don't really know) and that they are familiar with him, but Stoops at a place where he can sign Top 10 classes everywhere could be a very good program. Is his ceiling lower than you might want? I can see that, but I can also see a guy who gets more explosive players and consistently wins 9-10 games. Elko could do the same thing, but it's just weird how similar they seem to be style wise and all that and the total 180 in reactions to them. I mean Stoops and his staff (especially Marrow) have proven to be very solid recruiters. In the SEC, recruiting against tier 2 SEC programs and tier 1B B1G programs........outside their state. Elko's big conference recruiting chops are basically TBD.

The backlash and response truly started when folks realized how much money he made and that his contract would probably closely resemble what Fisher had left on his deal.

Nobody wanted to be boat anchored to Mark Stoops past his expiration if he went 7-5 every year. And there’s perhaps an irrational fear we were going to be used as another opportunity for a huge payday with little motivation for the coach to provide any results.

Aggy posters here have a tenuous relationship with reality at best. Their general lack awareness regarding ATM’s relevance is nothing short of stunning.

Money buys neither championships nor pedigree.

Stoops telling them to take a hike is very telling.

Yep. It's been a big reason why we have been decent under him and it was a reason we hired Stoops in the first place

We are very unlikely to out recruit Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, etc for people, but we can beat IU, Purdue, MSU, etc. for people.

Josh Pate reported otherwise. So now Josh is liar? I have to take “trust me bro” sources over 247 and On3 insiders who been reporting coaching changes all week. I’ve seen everything on State and A&M.

He is a good hire for the program.

I wouldn't say its hate. Like I don't dislike A&M or their posters (except that dude that tried to call Stoops a wife beater, he should seek out a mental health professional.)

The idea that A&M is too good for Mark Stoops though is just funny. Two teams, same trophy case. Then the inconsistency of trashing Stoops for not winning more at Kentucky but pimping Elko for "doing it at a basketball school"

In the end they went with Elko beause he's okay with milk men and a logical argument that he can recruit Texas better is reasonable. Although I would hope anyone with the Texas A&M Job and resources could recruit Texas.

A&M was on the cusp of a playoff berth (fully deserved it, but ESPN threw support behind media darlings ND and Ohio State instead) with Elko at DC. Once Elko left town, Jimbo cratered. All evidence points to Elko being the real source of Jimbo's early success at A&M. And we already know he can navigate our recruiting situation.

The only question left was whether that ability as DC would translate to HC ability. And in two years at Duke, he tripled their win total of the two years prior to his arrival. So IMO, that question is now answered.
