USA Today Article

quote:

Good thing Texas A&M applied to its safety school.

The Aggies didn't have the credentials to earn admission to Stanford or Cal-Berkeley, so it's off to Sacramento State, the commuter school that granted admission the moment it received the application.

quote:

You could convince me that Michigan State made a better hire by nabbing Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith. You could convince me Texas A&M made off better with Elko.

But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it?

Texas A&M settling for Elko is a humbling reminder that, despite all of its resources, it’s closer to being Michigan State than Michigan.

quote:

Two years ago, LSU and Southern Cal stealthily raided blueblood programs to make shocking hires. In contrast, the Aggies walked through Duke’s front door of snagged a coach from a basketball school. Most Duke fans probably felt a moment of disappointment, then shrugged and consulted the tipoff time for the Blue Devils’ hoops game against Arkansas.

Well, if Tennessee football beat writer for the Knoxville News Sentinel and USA TODAY Blake Toppmeyer says so, then it must be fact.

Hope it works out for all involved.

"Aggie Football is not an 8-4 job" -Ross Bjork

*Proceeds to hire a coach that has only finished 8-4 or worse as a HC*

The Aggies and their big-oil boosters came home to their safety option, while accepting they’re more like Michigan State than the big brother who overshadows them.
OOOOOOOF

A&M has always been "Michigan State", a Morrill Act school that lives in the shadow of the real state flagship university.

Really is a dumb article, we went out and stole a National Championship winning coach from a blue blood for our previous hire and how did that work out?

The longhorns went and hired a guy who hadn’t won more than nine games in 7 years of coaching before he got to Austin.

The reality is most programs have to hire up and comers so how this translates to A&M “settling” is weird.

And by the way, how is Lincoln Riley working out at USC this year?

I’m all for a good Aggie troll, but that is a shite article with a ridiculous big 10 comparison in a lame attempt to be provocative. Elko may not work out, but using his Duke record as a reference to limit his potential is disingenuous at best and ignorant at worst. Duke is only a notch above Vanderbilt when it comes to college football. They had 7 straight losing seasons in conference and were 1-17 the two seasons prior to Elko taking over.

It is the least surprising thing ever that you went out of your way to bring up Texas as a comparison for your school when the article doesn't even mention Texas by name.

Read what you wrote again and then tell us how you're NOT Michigan State instead of Michigan...

I actually saw it from the Austin American statesman also. Either way, what’s wrong with Michigan State?

A&M has always been a tier 2 school in both sports and academics.

Texas is and always will be the flagship.

Paying astronomical amounts of money for a loser coach nor poaching one from a basketball school will change that.

Nah, FSU and their fans were pushing Jimbo out the door by that point. A&M didn't really steal shite.

You hired the wrong person though. He was clearly riding Jameis' coattails if you were paying enough attention to CFB that season/season before.
