Hey Tornado,
This is more funny than hate but I think it is worth sharing.
1963 Ole Miss-State game or State-Ole Miss (was not called the Egg Bowl in those days) game was at Scott Field. Ole Miss trailed 10-7 late in the game. They drove down to the 2 yard line and on 4th down, Coach Vaught kicked the FG to tie the game 10-10. A tie ensured that Ole Miss would win the SEC. Which for Ole Miss was a good thing.
But my Dad was livid. He was so mad at the end of the game that he was cussing every Ole Miss fan he saw coming out of the stadium ….I mean in your face calling them every thing under the sun and he may have even had made up some new cuss words. Even went up to a charter bus that had come from Meridian with Ole Miss fans beating on the side of it and yelling endlessly (even at some of the people who he was good friends with). Finally my Mother had enough and called him out and he finally settled down.
He would have rather lost the game instead of tying it. He stayed mad about that game the rest his life. But you have to understand that State did not beat Ole Miss between 1947-1963. 14 losses and 3 ties. He was beyond frustrated. One of my Aunt’s later told me in all the games she went to in Starkville, she never saw State beat Ole Miss.
Ole Miss did not lose a game in Starkville between 1943-1990. Of course 18 of those games were in Jackson.
So from 1947-1973, there was a lot of frustration and anger on the State side at our futility in the rivalry. The 1963 game was one where we were at least as good as Ole Miss but failed to win game.
In 1963, State was four points away from winning the conference. Lost to Bama 20-19 tied Florida 9-9 along with Ole Miss 10-10 game.
All that to say GTHOM..but Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours….

It would appear that MercerBears is AWOL.
Certainly would be a happening if he would make an appearance here….

That is a great story. I’m still amazed it took College football so long to put an end to ties. I remember going to some tie games watching Ole Miss. It is like Bear said “like kissing your sister”

After the 1909 Ole Miss/Mississippi State game Captain Chuck Trotter had this to say about the rivalry:
quote:
"Well, I'll tell you, Mississippi State people are the salt of the earth under certain circumstances. Yes sir, so long as you beat 'em, they're as nice a bunch of folks as you care to meet up with anywhere.
"But don't forget this, if they ever beat you, then things change in a hurry. They lose all sense of proportion. They want to come right in the house with you, move right into the dining room and sit down and eat dinner with you just like they belonged there!
"And that's the reason, boys, we've got to keep beating 'em. It's the only way to keep them in the place and properly respectful."

Only player I know from IA is Ben Stallings. And he peaked at Lambuth coached by Hugh Freeze.
