Not gonna bag on Pete. Especially if Ole Miss folks are happy with things - which overall seem to be better.

Pete's issue at Alabama was big games against good offenses. But he was very good against most bad offenses. He seems to be doing the same thing at Ole Miss, which is a big step up for them.

Seems like it's been a win win overall for both.

We found the bama fan that actually went to college. I think 1 out of 3 is about where all of us expected.

People forget(or never bothered to even look it up) just how unbelievably bad our defense was last season.

Alabama vs FEI Top 25 Offenses

2022 (6) (Avg 14.0 rank)
- 28.8 PPG
- 414 YPG

2023 (5) (Avg 14.8 rank)
- 22.4 PPG
- 389 YPG

6.4 PPG less, 25 YPG less. So, anyone arguing this defense is "worse" than last year is just looking at some total stat number.

I retract my previous statement.

once again.....Bama's 2023(and the 2022, for that matter) defense means frick-all when we're trying to discuss the difference between the 2022 and 2023 Ole Miss defenses.

Oh I agree - was replying specifically to the Georgia guy who was trying to say this year's defense at Alabama is actually worse than last year's.

I stand by my take on Pete - win win for both parties

I don't think you'll find any rational Ole Miss fan that is going to argue that Bama downgraded DC's. Frankly, an Ole Miss fan shouldn't give a shite about it to begin with. We did, however, solidly upgrade on our position.

I don't doubt at all that statistics show Pete has a problem with good offenses(that being said....most DC's do). But we still have a massive talent gap on our defense. We have a few studs, a number of serviceable guys, and then zero quality depth. As was stated earlier, our defensive recruiting has already improved. The real tell for us is if we show improvement again next year.

Expectations.

Golding's defenses were very effective against 90% of the teams Bama faced. The problem was that he gets lit up by the 10% with highly effective offensive schemes and those are the 10% Bama has to beat.

Right now that's OK at Ole Miss because it's a big step up from where you were but Bama expects to be contending for titles in November, not 10 win regular seasons.

100% agree

And the defensive recruiting aspect is one of those things that frankly, Alabama fans don't even think twice about because it is a constant regardless of the coaches (for the most part). But that's a big selling point at most other places, especially ones where the head coach's forte is offense. Which makes Golding more valuable to Ole Miss than Alabama because that skill is in more demand there and will do more good than the at the margins work it might do at Alabama.

Correct. And that's a very rational thing to understand.

I will gladly, with out reservation, with out hesitation ...Take this worse defense then.
There was zero confidence that a 3rd and 8 meant anything. Opponents needed a score.. They got it. The ONLY thing that Golding could do was shut down MSU Air Raid. He seemed to have that going for him. That 1-6-4 BS that he tried to pull against LSU should have had him fired on the spot. Or dropping the best pass rusher in the game into a zone coverage - relegating him as useless.. But as it was..seemingly great theoretical xos on white board that players got blamed for not executing.

Too long version. He sucked, had no fire - except for his critics when he started drinking ( supposedly )

Golding made Zach Calzada, Haynes King, Max Johnson in 2021 at LSU, and Emery Jones in 2021 all look like Joe Montana.

The main difference with Bama 2022 and 2023 is that we could not run the ball last year and our receivers couldn't catch a cold. Neither are Golding's fault but our fundamentals like tackling and aggressiveness have improved ten fold with Steele this year. Gangtackling is something that we do well again and I handn't seen it in years at Bama.

I watched most Bama games the past several years and I'm not going to say I disagree with a lot of what the Bama people are saying on here, Golding was not great at Alabama. He had a ton of talent to work with and it seemed like every time I watched Bama last year they had 3+ pass interference calls and most the time in critical parts of the game. That said, it's very possible that he just needed a change of scenery. Saban obviously thought highly of him to make him defensive coordinator in the first place. That position can't be easy when you have a defensive guru looking over your shoulder. Maybe he 2nd guessed himself a bunch. I don't know. What I do know is our defense is better than it has been in years and he is recruiting defensive players better than anyone we have had. Again, not saying he wasn't bad at Bama, but I think he has been and will be a good hire for us.

I thank God you have him. I also thank Lane Kiffin. The best coaching decision that he’s ever made for Alabama

Kiffin wanted a recruiter that gave him an average defense.

Just because you don't care about total defense means nothing

The numbers show you haven't really improved from last year

You are sitting at the same record if Tenn doesn't blow in the second half of that game

Sorry, Bama isn't the Bama of old, even if you think Milroe running on a shitty LSU D says otherwise

I hope he settles for 1/2 of that deal. Because that clown will never make Ole Miss even average on defense. Golding can only make future NFL defensive players average as a unit. He’ll take average defensive players at Ole Miss and make them terrible. Exhibit A, Ole Miss already 2 games giving up 50. I honestly feel sorry for Ole Miss fans

Under Golding that would have been a certainty.

This year it was not. We shut them out and won the game. Thanks for proving our point.

He's working on landing a top defensive line class.

Golding 100% would have lost the UT & LSU games this year.
