Sears might go pro, and then there's a player or two that might not like playing time. Oats prob. Doesn't want a repeat losing a player and not having a plan in place.

I know for some players heights can be used against them and possible grades?

My thinking is as long as a player can put the ball in the hoop it doesn't matter how tall he is.

Professional has to do with ability to pay for play. Not as much to do with age. Everyone who is out of HS one year has the ability to go pro in the USA and can go pro anytime in Europe.

Happy Anniversary!
quote:

Tide Hoops History@BamaHistory
On this date five years ago, Nathaniel Justin Oats arrived in Tuscaloosa to become the 21st head basketball coach at The University of Alabama, and within two seasons his vision had re-ignited the dwindling spirits of a once-proud fan base numbed by mediocrity.

Currently in his fifth season leading @AlabamaMBB, Oats has rewritten school records multiple times with unprecedented achievements for a program already with a legacy of SEC success.

1.Most single-season wins in program history: 31-6 (2022-23)
2.First No. 1 seed and overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament (2022-23)
3.Fastest coach to reach 100 wins at Alabama (current record 115-53)
4.Only coach besides C.M. Newton to win multiple SEC regular-season championships (2021, 2023)
5.Only coach besides Wimp Sanderson to win multiple SEC Tournament championships (2021, 2023)
6.Highest-scoring offense on a per game average (2024), previous record 68 years old from 1956
7.Most single-season points in consecutive years (3,027 points in 2023, currently 3,085 points in 2024)
8.Back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances for the first time since 1990-91 (2023, 2024)
9.Three Sweet Sixteen appearances (2021, 2023, 2024) in four years
10.Back-to-back Top 4 seeds in the NCAA Tournament (2023, 2024)
11.Eight players selected in the NBA Draft (four first round, four second round)
12.SEC Coach of the Year (2021)

Oats started his college coaching career at Buffalo, first as an assistant to Bobby Hurley for two years and later succeeding him as head coach in 2015. Oats coached the Bulls for seasons, winning three Mid-American Conference Tournaments, two MAC regular-season titles and being named MAC Coach of the Year twice.

Before joining Hurley at Buffalo, Oats spent 11 years as the head coach at Romulus High School near Detroit, compiling a 222-52 record and winning the Class A state championship in 2013.

Yes. So does everyone. Parker is definitely gone. Probably a 99% chance Cosby is gone. Wouldn't be surprised to see Wague move on either. He only left WVU because of the coaching change and odds are his minutes will be even less next year. And then of course there is always the possibility of the totally unexpected portal loss of a guy playing starter minutes because you just never know what is going on behind the scenes with NIL and tampering.

Those are 3 three I think leave too, we have one open scholrship right now, and Estrada is leaving, so if those 3 leave that would give us 5 open spots. 3 for Reid, Cunningham, and Sherrell, 1 for Mallette and 1 open to add someone else.

It’s also possible Nelson decides to go pro even though I dont see him getting drafted unless he just wows people at the combine.

We contacted another transfer, Zeke Mayo.

Mayo was named Summit League Player of The Year. Averaged 18.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists this season.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of Sears going ahead and getting started on a pro career either. The Jalen Brunson comps are pretty hard to ignore at this point and it wouldn't surprise me if there's some interest in him as a second rounder. He's undersized, but he has the right traits (smart, efficient 3 level scorer, safe with the ball) to stick in the NBA as an undersized guard.

Nelson has gotten progressively worse as the season has progressed. To be honest, he's not more than average at ANY aspect of the game now. Hell, even his FT shooting has become average, at best.....just sayin....

Hes just a guy right now.

The regression is clear and obvious, but the solution is probably only going to be found through roster changes during the offseason at this point.

Let the guy go back to being a Kevin Durant type perimeter guy and get some rim defenders for next year and I bet his game changes significantly.

I don't believe we have any open scholarships right now. I know we did coming into the season but didn't they give Kai Spears a scholly in February?

It was reported they did. alabama-basketball-walk-on-kai-spears-offered-scholarship

There is no reason for Stevenson to leave the team. There are many experts who think Stevenson will play a big role for Bama next season.

Maybe it was just for this year? I hope. Makes no sense for him to eat one up for a couple more years.

I just don’t see where Nelson’s playing time is gonna come next year. At the 5 we will have Sherrill and a transfer. At the 4 we will have year 2 Stevenson, Reid, year 2 Mo D, and possibly a transfer. I think all of those are better than Grant

Looks like we’re playing in the
Players MTE in Vegas with a big NIL collective payout. Great transfer portal tool

Nelson is a player who wants to play SF.
He starts most of his offense face-up. He doesn't post-up.
In the off-season, Oats said he might play Nelson as SF, and he actually did several tests but failed. That's because he hasn't developed Major conference-level ball handling and perimeter shooting.
The reason Nelson's role changed when he came to Bama wasn't because there was no rim protector. Because his primary offensive options have been analyzed by opposing teams.
Ultimately, his career will depend on how well his perimeter shooting improves.

Agreed, right now he's just a tall guy who likes to shoot 3's, not a game changer with NBA range and shooting percentage.

I think he can become an NBA 3&D guy, but he has to go from where he's at as a shooter (26%) to 35%+ or he's not even gonna get a look in the draft.
