SWEET 16! Alabama Advances to Second Consecutive NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 with 72-61 Win over No. 12 Grand Canyon

Mark Sears recorded his first double-double of the season to lead the Crimson Tide to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four years and 10th time in program history

SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 4 seed Alabama men's basketball team used a late run and clutch baskets down the stretch to advance past a stubborn 12th-seeded Grand Canyon squad, 72-61, in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Round of 32 Sunday night. With the win, the Crimson Tide advances to its 10th Sweet 16 in school history, and the third time in the last four years under head coach Nate Oats .

The victory didn't come easy, as the Lopes fought back from a 10-point second half deficit to take a 58-55 lead with 6:03 left to play. From that point on, the Crimson Tide dominated, outscoring GCU 17-3 the rest of the way, including 10-straight points to secure the win.

Mark Sears led the way with a double-double, accounting for 26 points and 12 rebounds to go along with six assists and three steals. Ryan Griffen added 13 points, all coming in the first half, with Aaron Estrada adding eight points,10 rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Head Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments
"Character win, I think. We had a chance, could have folded, had a lot of things that didn't go our way, a lot of foul trouble. They lived at the free-throw line. Our guys started to show a little frustration and I thought we pulled it together and showed a lot of mental toughness. We've been using the word next a lot lately, next play, just go to the next play, like, forget about the call that didn't go your way, forget about the turnover, forget about the offensive possession where you missed or your teammate missed. It doesn't matter, just play hard on defense. This is one of our best defensive games of the year.

"We fouled too much, they shot 37 free throws, we obviously benefited from them not shooting it great at the line, but when we didn't foul, we got pretty good stops. Tyon Grant-Foster is the real deal. But he scored 29, went to the free-throw line 16 times and took 22 shots.

"So, we're playing next Thursday. There's only going to be 16 left. I think our non-conference schedule got us ready for this. Four teams in the non-conference are all in the Sweet 16 and we lost to all four, but I thought we got better from it. So, our defense is getting better as the year goes on. This might have been our best defensive performance of the year."

When Cormac Ryan was 20 y/o and a Freshman, Stevenson was 13 y/o and a 7th grade student. Due to the COVID and redshirts, there is a 5-6 year age difference even in the college league, not the professional league.

Bama is 14-3 when Griffen scores 10+. 8-8 when he does not.

Also, looks like our Def Efficiency over the past week would rank us 38th. Defense has gotten better.

With Oats losing 3 coaches, and what 6 players? He has done a remarkable job since your schedule was hard as hell. I think we have played teams that have made it to sweet sixteen five times. We’ve lost all 5. Something has to give Boys. Can’t go 0-6.

Griffen has been the X factor for us all season. All the flak him and Estrada get from the FOG dipshits who have ruined this thread is ridiculous. We have a championship caliber backcourt and you'd think we're trotting a bunch of JAGs out there.

The backcourt is the only thing carrying us...especially considering that we essentially play 4 guards and a power forward as the starting line up.

Estrada very often leads in a number of categories that are not scoring but are important and crucial to winning.

Incredible effort to rally and overcome last night. Says a lot about the players and program. We’ve come a long way.

We all realize that Estrada is a limited player but he is also a very important player for this team and has done a lot of things to help this team win games.

And who the hell else is going to provide those guard minutes he provides? Seriously, name the other option. He is easily the best option as the secondary ball handler. In fact Wrightsell is virtually the only other good option and Wrightsell is frankly better served playing off ball and of course has been hurt the last quarter of the season.

And even in those games where Estrada is not shooting well and missing some layups he should make (which is of course frustrating) he doesn’t go into a shell and he continues to rebound and do other things to help the team. He does this while admittedly usually being one the least athletic guards on the court every game. That isn’t going to change for him unfortunately. But those that relentlessly trash him and call him a terrible player while he continues to win the hard hat and provide a lot of little things this team needs to win are demonstrating a very myopic view of basketball.

Wrightsell will be able to play with us Thursday. He got elbowed in the head, had a head injury," said Alabama head coach Nate Oats after the game. "He's had some real bad luck here lately, but we're going to be playing again and he can play with us again on Thursday.

This is very good news. Assuming this means he did not suffer another concussion, which is very good news for Wrightsell obviously. Feels like we are going to have to have some guys have career type games to knock off UNC.

Maybe it clicks for Nelson and he breaks out. Bama has won the first two games without much from him at all.

I'm proud of the guys last night. This was essentially a home game for GCU. The whole crowd but the very few Bama fans that made the trip were pulling for the upset and the officiating made it basically a home game for them as well. Even with all that we found a way

Thinking about Los Angeles, I assume the crowd will be 1 - Arizona, 2 - North Carolina and then Bama/Clemson. Maybe if Zona wins game 1 they hang around and cheer for Bama to knock off UNC.

Anybody else think Bama basketball gets a little “take down big bad Bama” treatment from opposing/neutral fans spilling over from football? Just seems like there is a little more passion for beating Bama basketball than you would expect for a program that has been middling on a national scale for most of its existence.

Damn, what a deal.

I also like to think there were a few hundred Auburn fans there last night in their brand new Grand Canyon gear that took yet another L.

Yea 100% certainty Ariz/Clem fans will be cheering for the Tide.

Arizona brings fans too.

Anyone else shocked the line is so low? I thought it'd be -7.5/8.

I think a significant number of the people there in GCU gear were paid actors. Dead serious. They were still cheering and chanting while their team totally shite the bed and gave up a 17-3 run to end the game instead of sitting in stunned silence like people who are actually emotionally invested would.

Probably just leftover Auburn and Yale fans. Maybe some local Gonzaga basketball/Washington football fans there too that were more anti-Bama/pro-upset than they were pro-Grand Canyon specifically.
