Is the "offensive line bad" or is "left tackle bad"?

Per PFF, the OL is responsible for 12 of the 31 sacks this season (5 to RBs, 2 to TEs, 12 to the QB - which is it's own issue).
Here is how the 12 sacks breakdown in terms of responsibility
1. Proctor (LT) (7)
2. Pritchett (LT) (3)
3. Roberts (RG) (1)
4. Latham (RT) (1)
10 of the 12 sacks have been given up by LT. The rest of the OL has given up 2 sacks in 7 games.
Per PFF grades (don't love them, but at least give some idea)
LT - Proctor (52.9) / Pritchett (40.1)
LG - Booker (74.3)
C - McLaughlin (50.0)
RG - Dalcourt (78.4) / Roberts (75.1)
RT - Latham (85.6)
McLaughlin also has issues (10 pressures in 217 pass block opportunities), but his are at least slower developing and Jalen can generally shift off his mark and avoid sacks.
If we had just a league average left tackle (Tyler Steen, for instance) I think this would be a good offensive line. But we don't, apparently, and the young guys don't seem to be getting any better on the job.

I know Proctor is young, but mygoddness, this can't go on the rest of the season

Agree, but we throw Pritchett in there and he's nearly as bad. I know they badly want to let him figure it out but it's ruining the offense.

Does PFF also account for the bad snaps, the inconsistent run blocking and the pressures from missed blocking assignments?

Proctor's problem is speed and agility. He's a big oaf right now who doesn't move well. That won't get fixed this season. Hopefully with some more conditioning and training he'll get there by next season.
I feel like our oline does block very well at times. But when it's bad, it's BAD.
Not really sure what the answer is.

PFF numbers arent accurate. If they were, Dalcourt would not have gotten benched. I mentioned moving DD back to center and got DV'd into oblivion. So anybody putting a lot of stock into these numbers should consider what they are saying.

Proctor has been awful in running blocking too (54.4). Pritchett has at least been solid in that area (73.0). Seth has been bad in it (59.8), shocker.
It's not been a terrible run blocking line, though. Not great (and certainly not living up to the grand hype), but not terrible. Our rushing efficiency with sacks removed is pretty decent. Not great, but decent.

Oh Proctor.
Just sacrifice a TE every play. I’m cool with it.

I don't like the grades but the stat numbers are generally pretty reliable.
Dalcourt has been awful in the run game this season per their grades (56.4 @ USF, 58.9 vs Ole Miss, 60.5 @ State). I'd guess that was the reason they decided to move on. Roberts, per their numbers, has been better (not great) in the run game (68.4 @ A&M, 64.3 vs Arkansas). Again, pretty subjective based on the grading.
I don't know the center deal with Dalcourt/Seth. Just don't think either one of them are very good, and Seth has the experience at C at this point I guess.

Which is why it's perplexing they keep sending him out there. I'm sure more consistent technique would lead to improved performance, but if a big chunk of his issues are basically unfixable until the offseason...........what are we doing?

Still doesn't work like half the time

Also - Tennessee's young kid on the edge, Pearce, is exactly the sort of matchup we've struggled with. Long, bendy, fast edge rushers. If we don't come up with something and execute it that kid is gonna have 5 sacks and 10 pressures.

The weird thing is that he didn't struggle in camps against quick edge rushers. It may be more of a mental thing where he is overthinking what he needs to do.

yeah…I’m thinking this. I think the LT play is our main problem.
The run blocking is actually slowly improving. We were gashing arky at end of 2nd and in the 3rd quarter, the blocking was pretty good. Then we abandoned the run on 3rd and 2 down near the goal. Go watch Travis Reier’s second watch video starting at the middle of the 2nd quarter thru the 3rd. He breaks down the blocking matchups pretty good.

I think that was the problem with Pritchett. He gave up a sack around the outside to #40. Then like a play or two later he gave up a sack to the inside.
That's a mental issue that can be worked through. That was an experienced player beating an inexperienced player.
Proctor is getting consistently run around. Thats not a mental issue, that is physical.
But why i cant wrap my head around is why arent we punishing teams with QB run when their ends rush deep. Ive been watching Saban mush rush every running QB for 16 years and when the shoe is on the other foot we dont know what to do about it. Why?

Let’s do the math lol. If his grade is 50ish then half of the time for a TE makes him a 75. I’ll take it ;)

Thanks for the info.
How many of the 12 QB sacks belong to Milroe? I.e., since Simpson was sacked 5 times vs USF, how many of those were on him?

Brockermeyer being a bust + Kight and George transferring left us with literally nothing but Latham and a bunch of freshmen at OT. I'm certainly not saying Kight or George would be an upgrade or anything, but it might give us the flexibility to move Latham to LT. As it is we simply don't have many options and the ones we do have are all bad.

Some of those freshman OTs look promising for the future. McVay and Alinen.
