Why did Ole Miss football die after the 1960’s?

They were one of the winningest programs from the 1950’s and 1960’s and even won some championships.

After the 60’s, everything went to shite apparently, and they’ve never been heard from again in the national championship discussion. They haven’t even won an SEC title in decades.

What exactly caused this? What factors led to the evaporation and disappearance of the winning ways of such a proud football program?

Is it pretty similar to what has happened to Nebraska football ever since the early 2000’s?

Arkansas had success in the 60s as well. Personalities and determination to win played a big factor back then. Plus looking at the bigger picture, our 1964 undefeated team had Jerry Jones, 6’0” and 182lbs, at offensive guard and Jimmy Johnson at nose man on defense.

I remember Archie Manning playing his guts out to win games. It was about desire and which team had the most of it talent level or not.

Of course there were the usual teams with more talent but it was nice to watch David beat Goliath every now and then and the bowl setup made it happen occasionally.

Post season games now are not very interesting anymore unless we’re a fan of the handful of teams who are always going to be there plus the one whipping boy..

Frank Broyles was a great coach but had problems with Johnny Vaught. College football really hasn’t changed. It is about the leadership. It’s that simple. It is why they make so much money now compared to then. The state of Mississippi has a low population and not a lot of money. Yet we have Southern Miss, State and Ole Miss. 3 division 1 public programs. Cant say the same for Arkansas, Louisiana or Tennessee. Just not enough money to go around.

That and nepotism.

Vaught guys kept hiring Vaught guys instead of better qualified people.

It’s the reason why LSU was a sleeping giant in Saban’s eyes and why it baffles me we were not a better program historically.

Louisiana has 4.5 Million residents
Mississippi has 2.94 Million
Arkansas has 3 Million
Alabama has 5 Million.

Basically we have 1 major football institution with roughly the same population of Alabama while Mississippi has the same number of major football institutions with only 60% of the population.

Mississippi has extremely poor public education so many of the state's athletes do not qualify academically. Also it has a small population with three major in state football schools. That plus the fact that HBCUs, Bama and LSU usually take their share of talent.

Johnny Vaught burned-out and retired.

Ole Miss was undergoing some major philosophical changes among their faculty and leadership outside of their athletic department.

Ole Miss was unable to secure the finances that would allow them to keep up in arms race of facilities, etc.

Also, it had a lot to do with black players being accepted into the league and there was some dirty pool played onnthe recruiting trails back then .... really dirty stuff.

Ole Miss got the wrong end of the pool stick in many ways.

Bear had a 7-6-1 record against OM back then.

Bear Bryant and Johnny Vaught were great friends and decided not to play each other. From 1934 to 1964, Ole Miss and Bama only played once. SECRant Thread about it

You think S Miss irrelevant football is somehow better than Memphis' program? Or Tulane?

Bryant and Dodd were the only two coaches to have a winning record against Johnny Vaught. Pretty impressive.
