Unless that reason is because he was sitting on the bench behind Nick Marshall, it isn't relative. Had Marshall played at Oregon, he may have been in the same spot on the roster as Ashford. We really don't know how that would have worked out.

I'll take a stab at it. All things Brian Harsin suck complete arse? That's one place to start.

He is not "just a sophomore." He is a grown man that can purchase alcohol once his 21st birthday rolls around in a bout 3 weeks. If he was going to make a move this was the year and he didnt measure up. Now next year I have no clue what happens, but if Thorne is back and starting, I dont know why Ashford would be hanging around. You talk like he needs to be mentored as the starter just for him to get some the necessary requisite development as if that is the only way to get some development. What has be been doing in all of these years at practice? Robby isnt even developing for us now. We are asking him to run the ball which is the same thing he could have done when he was 18 years old. We are past talking about Ashford developing nicely. If he was going to turn it on he would have beat out a very beatable Thorne.

And I will throw this out there as well just to make it burn:
TJ Finley started over Ashford last year until TJ got hurt and benched.
Tell me Drifter, in what world is Ashford the fricking starting QB and Auburn is happy.

Ashford would have already made his move if he was better than Thorne. I'm sorry. But if Ashford has to go in if Thorne gets benched then that means we have zero QBs.

Nick was dismissed from a DB at UGA, went to Garden City JC & STARTED AT QB, then transferred to AU where he got no QB training remember Gus? So about even in my books. Dude started two straight years here. Robby is still learning but he has been at college since 2020. 2 years there in Oregon and then here. He was a QB there in Oregon with a decent QB coach. So the coaching angle doesn't hold. Not saying that his light won't come on, but he is no where that he needs to be for starting in this Offense.

I have never seen a group of guys who so desperately want to “MAKE” a quarterback out of a guy who is not a quarterback.
We have been doing it for years on this board.
I have never understood it. 6 months of coaching by any coach is not going to turn someone into a D1 quarterback. They either are or they are not one.

Do you think Nick Marshall would have looked good as Georgia's QB in 2011? Because I genuinely do not.

Well it sounds like you have it all figured out then. Not much point in even waiting to see how Ashford's story plays out. I wonder how many people had written off Malik Willis before CHF turned him into a NFL QB.

Same coach that supposedly developed Willis would rather use pedestrian Thorne. What does that tell you. Just bet or you're full of shite. Those are my new rules.
Im tired of arguing and being right and when yall get called on your stupid arguments yall behind your internet tears "YOUR JUST A BAMMER!! YOURE MEAN!"

Ashford would have had 5 losses in 2013. At least.

And btw Willis will never do anything in the NFL.
If Willis stayed at Auburn he would've never got drafted.
If Freeze worked with Willis at Auburn he still wouldve never got drafted.
Willis will probably be QB 3 this weekend.
Who cares abour your newest edition of "i love our backups QB" segments

I was just addressing the point on coaching and situations not having an affect certain players. I think Nick Marshall was to some degree a system QB and Ashford is a significantly lesser version of him.

As of today it's NM no matter how you cut it but Robby's story is still ongoing.
As a QB NM played in a national championship, had a long resume of highlight reel runs, and had a mean deep ball. Robby has time but he has a long way to go to even come close.
As a pure athlete NM returned kicks in the NFL... plus played defense when he didn't do it for most of his college career... the guy was so athletic that he got signed in the league on pure athleticism. Again - maybe Robby will develop but those are big shoes.
If you base it on just what they've done in football games... by the end of the season maybe this will be different
Pure speed - NM
Tackle breaking - NM
Elusiveness - NM
Deep ball - NM
Knack for reading RPO - NM
Short game - neither has been great

You can define the parameters however youd like. Just show me you think Ashford can be a successful QB at Auburn. Otherwise you're full of shite.
FACT: Ashford has gotten beaten out for the job every year in college.
Auburn on crack: But that means he never received instruction as the starter!!!

Usually if the defense has a guy with a chance to play on Sundays zone read becomes almost impossible to run because the end can play both RB and QB. NM (and Cam for that matter) were so hard to tackle that even with a really good DE he's usually not getting to that QB on a pull.

What the hell is this even supposed to mean?
He hasn't been coached as the "starting QB" because he hasn't won any of the QB battles he has taken part of. He was stuck at #3/#4 on Oregon's depth chart for two seasons and then LOST last year to TJ Finley who himself wasn't even supposed to be the starter as Harsin blatantly brought in Calzada to supplant Finley who wasn't good the previous year after Nix went down.
You have to actually win the QB battle to get "coached as a starting QB". And here's the other very important factoid: this isn't like Carson Beck where he's sitting behind Stetson Bennett who is winning titles. Ashford made zero movement against a bunch of weak QB's at Oregon, and then he came here and lost out to Finley who once again was supposed to be #2 himself. Ashford even had ALL SPRING this year as the incumbent starter and he couldn't impress enough to lock down the starting job; instead Freeze and Montgomery went out and brought in Thorne who immediately won the job despite being in the system for less time.
So he's lost the battle two straight years here at Auburn, and at Oregon he couldn't even pass Jay Butterfield who himself transferred to San Jose State because he was third string behind Nix and Thompson. Butterfield didn't even win the starting job at San Jose State; he is the backup to last year's starter Chevan Cordeiro.
The amount of blind belief in a guy who is in his 4th year and has shown no movement is crazy. He looked exactly the same as he did last season in game #1 on the one drive wherein they weren't just using him as a runner. He needs to move down like Finley did if he wants to play QB.
