Not Alabama and Georgia, not Alabama and LSU….

Oregon St and WSU being left out in the cold has me thinking, when do the BIG and SEC start to trim the fat. When do schools like Alabama, Texas, Ohio St., and Michigan look at schools like Miss St., Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and Rutgers and ask themselves "why are these programs that bring less value and less eyeballs getting the same conference payout I am?"

I think it is a question which will unfortunately be asked in the future.

If you don't think it's coming, you're deluded.

The gem is the assumption that Alabama and Texas run the SEC together at this point

Poor old sarge is worried that TAMU will have to go back to the Big 12, where they struggled mightily.

I personally think a single 24 team super league won't break away, but the SEC, B1G, and Big 12 all with 20-24 teams will break away for football and basketball as part of a 60-72 team group.

There will be some form of unequal revenue share, which could be all conference teams get the same base money. The unequal portion is paid from Playoff / March Madness funds based on results.

Make the football playoffs, here's an extra $10 mil. Semi finals, here's an extra $20 mil. Etc...

It’s a slippery slope, but now that CFB is a TV product only, I worry for smaller market share teams. There’s no reason Oregon State should be in this position.

If it’s 10 then bidenomics must be a bitch.

Stanford would have been a cool add, but too far away. They would contribute in every sport but football. I heard their admissions standards for football players is pretty high.

Miss State and Vanderbilt both have more recent National Championships in a Big 3 sport than Texas

Every player and every program is doing what’s best for their bottom line with zero regard for anyone else or tradition. That tends to accelerate change (& possible collapse).

I thought this already happened almost exactly like you wrote. When Ole Miss goes to an NY6 bowl, they get the money.

I found this:

"For both Alabama and Georgia playing in the CFP, the SEC will receive $12 million, $6 million for each team. The conference receives no bonus for one of its teams reaching the national championship. The SEC will also receive another $4 million due to Ole Miss playing in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.

While the SEC will receive the money, due to the conference’s bylaws, a portion of it goes to the individual team competing in the CFP. The conference gives $2.05 million of that money to schools playing in the semifinal, and an additional $2.15 million for competing in the national championship. The remaining money the SEC has is distributed across the conference."

The SEC has stuck together because things are good.

Wouldn’t that create even more of a vicious cycle than we currently have? And wouldn’t players demand a hefty slice of those incentive-based bonuses?

Which is a silly assumption. We run it solo.

Alabama tags along for when we need to get in the mind of folk much dumber than ourselves
