2nd & 3rd tier fan bases- do you legitimately think your team can EVER win a Nat Champ?

Genuinely curious as to whether these fan bases operate under the auspices of delusion or if they deep down know that their program is not a true N.C. type program but can’t admit it here.
NO SHOT

I think this is a bit lazy, considering ole miss has won one before and is typically 'pretty good" these days. And it was less than a decade ago that miss. state. was ranked #1 in america. Crazier things have happened than to say no shot ever

Mizzou
ranked #1 during this century, although with a much weatker pre-SEC schedule. Has played in 2 SECCGs. They most liklely won't ever, but I don't know if I'd say literally NEVER

sadly for these teams I do not see any way for them to ever win one

If Clemson can do it, why not South Carolina?

Pretty ignorant statement to be honest. South Carolina finished #4 in the AP poll in 2013. You just used a similar argument as to why Miss. State or Missouri could possibly win one. Syracuse won a national championship in 1959. Does that mean they'll win one again before South Carolina does? That's your argument for Ole Miss. Not that I think SC will win a National Championship, but your logic is quite flawed.

absolutely we could. Spurrier brought us 3 11 win seasons. If the man is 20 years younger thats possibly us instead of Clemson in 2016.
Carolina has the facilities and support to do it.

UGA just won 2 so at least 2nd tier fanbases have a chance

SC was rolling with Spurrier!

Perhaps the shittiest thing about college football is that there are only about 10 programs with any chance of winning a title. It's become a terrible product from the competitive balance standpoint. I much prefer the NFL.

They don't play in the ACC.

I do generally agree, but it does ebb and flow. Clemson 15 years ago would have been a program most thought had zero chance to ever when. Now they are top 5 every year it seems. TCU played their way to a title game last year. UGA was a consistent 10 game winner, made a few moves and is now a championship contender each year.
Bama,OSU, OU they arent going anywhere but some teams do ebb in and out.

Missouri, for example, came close to playing in a national championship game in recent memory. 2007? They were a win away.
But, here's the thing, I think it'll actually get harder for teams in this tier to win an NC now that the playoffs expand to 12 teams. They'd have to win 3-4 games against the toughest competition in the playoffs, as opposed to riding a Big 12 regular season to a winner take all game.

Clemson plays a clownshoe conference (which applied to the ACC in football even before FSU's recent struggles). We'll see if they can keep it up in the NIL era which nullifies Newspring Church money.

There has been an occasional foray by a non-Blue Blood or/Top 15 Traditional Power into NC or at least Top 5 contention during any given season's rankings; so it can happen. And it will happen more now that the Playoff field has expanded:
Washington
Colorado
UCLA
Oregon
Boise St.
BYU
Utah
Texas Tech
TCU
Okie State
K-State
Iowa
Ole Miss
Miss State
South Carolina
North Carolina
West Virginia
Central Florida
Virginia Tech
Pittsburgh
Louisville
Kentucky
Mizzou
Iowa State
Minnesota
Michigan St.
Arizona St.

I’m pretty sure that no one thought florida would win one prior to Spurrier arriving. Yeah a lot has changed in the game since then but that’s the point really, things can be pretty unpredictable, so I would not assume anything. How did Clemson go from being a team that for 5 straight years could not beat SC but got good post season spots due to finishing high in their weak conference to being a repeat champion? Things changed, they got better and the postseason morphed.
The point being that, sure, at the moment everything seems fixed, but it’s not. I’m not sure how NIL and the open transfer portal will play out in the long term but historically, the ability to concentrate and retain top talent has been what leads to dominant runs by teams. Will NIL/portal eventually make this impossible, maybe, maybe not. But is foolish to just assume that the way things are now is how they will be forever. One of those teams could catch the lightning and have an awesome year and win it all, made easier by the ability to assemble a team with the portal. It’s far less likely for some like Vandy I will admit.

We have massive advantages over SCar though. All we need is a great HC.

Yep, they had a marvelous 3 year run from 11-13. Awesome teams. Despite this being the best run in school history none of those teams finished wiht less than 2 losses.

I don't think syracuse will ever win one again. If they wre in the OP I'd say the same thing

My statement was a direct response to the very specific question "do you think your team can EVER win a title". I pointed out that it's a little illogical to suggest that since ole miss already HAS won a title. Maybe I'm getting too in the weeds semantically.
quote:
Not that I think SC will win a National Championship
so we're saying the same thing...
I mean I was trying to be quick but I could list out a whole laundry list of reasons SC won't ever win one but was trying to be somewhat polite.

That’s only true for teams outside the sec. If you’re say Miss State and your only loss is to an undefeated Bama, under the expanded playoff you will more than likely be in. Yeah the playoff teams would be good but in this hypothetical, State would likely have been playing the best competition all season already. So in the playoffs they would have a real shot, biggest issue would be the rematch.

Biggest issue is that a program like Miss St will now have to win at least 3 postseason games even if they somehow got a first round bye. Will they ever have the depth necessary, especially after the SEC regular season grind?
