It’s amazing how sec fans pay no attention to the whole of college football . We had no qb we had two 5 stars transfer out and 2 5 star recievers left .. Our qb was hurt 3 games and we had a 3rd string backup qb from Pittsburg as our starter . We lost2 of our top OL to NFL and 5 NFL defensive players . Riley wasn’t doing as good as it seemed the previous year we won like 5-6 games by less than one td. TCU game we had a backup at every secondary position in the secondary minus one corner spot . OL had two injuries that game …. We basically had zero depth after Riley left and no one wanted to buy in to Venables right away….. now all those guys are gone we will be much improved.

He also made some very questionable hires with an open checkbook. He hired a DC that has been a failure everywhere he has been, and was only an analyst at Clemson. He also hired another guy that had zero on field experience, lost a guy that been there over 20 years who made a boneheaded mistake and was forced to resign. He was replaced as receiver coach by another analyst. Then after his starting Qb was injured he had zero plan for a backup and had to use a TE running the wildcat against Tx. Almost all of his defensive problems can be summed up by saying he was trying to put a square peg in a round hole and kept doing it all year instead of adapting his defense to the talent he had, which wasn’t much. Throw in an OC that refused to take any time off the clock in close games.

Well said, that’s why this year is make or break for Venables. If the same mistakes are made, it’s time to move on.

Bad take. OU is not getting rid of BV after 2 years. Do that and your recruiting classes implode plus a line of top players portal. He is recruiting great and fans need to not panic so much. He had to rebuild from ground up. I hope you are not one of those fans who boos the home team, my goodness this is an overaction. Trust me the admin knows what he walked into and will give him proper time

Let’s agree to disagree.

Your spot on regarding recruiting, but that’s it. Even Riley didn’t hesitate to pull Spencer Rattler when he was throwing crucial picks.

The Texas, TCU, and West Virginia games were telling. Hopefully he’s learned from those mistakes.

The Oklahoma program was on auto-pilot for a 10+ win season in an easy Big12. I’m not buying that this is all on Venables.

They lost one of the best offensive play callers on college football and a 5* QB that won the heisman at bjs new school. Said offensive play caller couldn’t recruit the defensive lines so when the absolute catalysts on offense left, the defense wasn’t good enough to pick up the slack.

Not been mentioned but Venerables is cleaning house. Only 21 players remain from LR's last year at Oklahoma. Venerables has done very well in securing talent from the portal including five very good defensive linemen. Oklahoma may have as many as 20 newcomers in their two-deep this year.

Wrong it’s recent within the last 10 years . Kind of like UGA and Bama having explosive offenses .

The average fan just shouts “Venables sucks”

Roster was decimated by LR’s departure. BV brought in a completely new culture & philosophy. And, injuries happened. That combo is why I’d cut him some slack for last season. This season’s critical though.

As much as I want to dogpile OU they are favored in 11 games this year and their schedule is softer than UGAs.

They have the 8th best odds to win the NC. They avoid Tech, Baylor and K State.

They still have a top seven 24/7 composite roster

I’m still pissed at the second half and OT periods that Stinkin Slimey called in the 2018 Rose Bowl. That was the beginning of the downfall. It really came to a head when LSU drilled the knife through the heart. Last year was just weird. Easily could have won 10. Just can’t finish.

What gives me hope is BV went 15-7 vs SEC and that includes bowl games and playoffs. He knows whats needed to compete. His D has been in top 10 after his first 2 years.

21: L 3-10 GA / W 30-0 SC
20: No games vs SEC
19: W 24-3 aTm / L 25-42 LSU
18: W28-26aTm / W56-35SC / W44-16 Bam
17: W14-6 Aub / W34-10SC / L6-24 Bam
16: W19-13 Aub / W56-7 SC / W35-31 Bam
15: W37-32 SC / L40-45 Bam
14: L21-45 GA / W35-17 SC
13: W38-35 GA / L17-31 SC
12: W26-19Aub / L17-27SC / W25-24GA

SEC fans do pay attention. When LSU sent their 2nd string quarterback in midway through the third quarter, in a playoff game, it didn’t require a genius to understand OK had problems. LR ran to USC like his hair was on fire. Some believe he knew being wouldn’t succeed in the SEC.Being competitive in the SEC requires strong defense. Riley leaving was the first step in the right direction, and time will tell if BV was the right hire.
