Jessie Owens was the greatest Buckeye. Jessie may have had the greatest hour in sports when he set 4 world records at the Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor. It is considered the most impressive feat in sports.
Then he went to Berlin in 1936 and won 4 gold medals in front of Hitler and his Nazis, Spoiling the Fuheres party.
He has been considered by some to be the greatest athlete of the 20th century. I agree with this.

Jim Thorpe would like a word on the greatest athlete. From my school, gotta say Reggie White.

Herschel, Champ Bailey, and Charlie Trippi would be the candidates from Georgia. First two are all time great football players and track stars, Herschel was also a winter Olympian.
Trippi was the Maxwell Award Winner in 1946 after returning home from service in WWII and was runner up to Glenn Davis of Army in Heisman voting, was the #1 overall draft pick to the Bears, later becoming a pro football hall of famer. He also hit .475 with 11 HR in 30 games for Georgia. He turned down offers from the Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, and Phillies to go to the NFL.

The SEC should have produced many great athletes. At least one would suspect.

No one claimed he was the best RB. The question is in regards to best athlete.
He’s the only athlete ever to be named an all star in two separate sports, both the NFL and Major Leage baseball. He was a 3-sport athlete in college, qualifying for NCAA Nationals in Track and Field.
I have a hard time thinking of anyone else even coming close to those credentials.

Well, if you're going to throw out someone who went to Michigan but never competed for them then I will throw out Jack Nicklaus who did the same at Ohio State.
