You know this will cause an argument of ranked at the time vs ranked at the end.

Some of this is self-fulfilling. If you lose to a team like Arkansas or Vanderbilt, the voters won't want to vote you into the top 25.

I mean, you can only beat the teams that are in front of you. If we beat someone, and then they continue to lose, not our fault.

I'd be curious what their record is against current ranked teams.

Finally. Ranked at end of season is the only metric that matters. Great post.

Of course you chose finished. Can't have Zach Arnett in first place since you're sorting by win% and he's undefeated vs. top 25 opponents at 1-0 vs. Illinois in our bowl game as interim.

Not even one Steven alter, or his awkward step brother Sidewalk, response to be found.

Interesting

Saban has compiled a 274-67-1 (.803) record, including a 183-25 (.880) mark in Tuscaloosa. I'm not sure where the 51 losses come from, but they weren't in Tuscaloosa. That would mean 51 of his total of 67 losses were to top 25 teams, which is possible I guess.

I remember about Mullen was that we didn't play many #18-25 teams. That was part of his bad record against the Top 25. They were either unranked or Top 15, often top 5. If they were #20 and he beat them, they didn't finish in the top 25.

I think total wins is probably the most important component to the stat.

Winning percentage is probably second and provides great context.

You aren't supposed to win a lot of games against a top 5 opponent. Just getting any is impressive.

Extrapolate that down to the majority of programs and the scale slides:
You aren't supposed to win a lot of games against top 10 opponents.
Or you aren't supposed to win a lot of games against top 15 opponents.
Etc.. etc..

This is the most eye opening section. I had no idea Lane was so lame. And Heupel the savior is 6-10??? Wow.
