At what point does the crying game end....

I have a lot of respect for this dude and what he's accomplished. But for all the "he cares about college football" stuff. He could have made this argument long before now, but his team wasn't outside looking in at that time. This is a recent quote, not at the time he got left out.
“So but the problem with the way the whole system is, there’s no accounting for that, right,” Saban said. “So, all we do is take the teams that win the most games at the end of the year, put them in the playoffs. But do you really get the best teams? When they told me that we would be favored against three out of the four teams that got in the playoff, I’m like, why aren’t we in the playoffs?”
“Does that mean they have a better team,” Saban said. “Or does it mean that those people don’t know what they’re talking about? I really don’t know that. But I’m not being critical of anybody. But if you’re going to have parity, you have to have a better way of figuring out who has the best teams, not just because you lose two games on the last play of the game.
“That knocks you out when you may be better than somebody else who didn’t have the same circumstances that they had played.”

He’s not really wrong. The SEC schedules announced are pretty fricking brutal. I’m all for it because I think it will make the game like the NFL.
Is it fair that Ohio State is going to automatically get in at 11-1 after playing no one but Michigan and a solid LSU team is 9-3 bc they had to play Georgia, Bama, Tennessee, and maybe a surging Texas or Oklahoma?
Ohio State got in the playoffs with 6 wins in 2020. Saban has a point.

At some point, winning your games is important. Do I think Georgia could've beaten and would've been favored over Notre Dame every year they made it? Absolutely.
Alabama could've lost to A&M or Texas last year and still would've been favored by Vegas over TCU.
And I know it won't go over well on here, but LSU lost four games last year and three of the four were not close and one of those was to the last place team in the West. He couldn't beat that team. They played four teams in the ap or coaches final top ten. Bama was the only top ten team that didn't beat them.
At some point you have to own what you are.

But he’s only making the point because his team didn’t get in. Not that it makes him different from pretty much any other coach.

It makes him different in some ways because he still hasn't moved on. Every coach with a chance at making the playoff argues for their team before the committee selects. That's done now. The playoff is finished. The season is over. Get ready for 2023. It's not gonna be changed this year and next year has 12 teams involved.

No he's making a point because going forward with SEC schedules really good SEC teams are going to be left out. That goes not just for Bama but everyone.

Three teams is the most from one conference that's gonna be in most years. Maybe four every now and then. They were never gonna agree to let half the teams be SEC teams. Just the way it is.
But there were very good arguments for TCU over Bama and Ohio State over Bama last year. TCU and Bama had a common opponent. TCU beat every team they played going into the playoff and Bama had shown it could struggle against teams in TCU's conference.
And he would not be saying a thing about this if Alabama were in and Tennessee or Georgia or LSU or whoever had been left out with two close losses playing an SEC schedule. This is not about protecting the conference.

No, it’s just like when he bitched about the up tempo offenses when he lost to teams employing it. Said it was bad for the players and would cause injuries. Apparently that “sincere” concern for player safety didn’t stop him from going up tempo did it? It’s who he is, he can’t help it. He can’t handle losing and will whine about it because it just eats at him.

If he were really concerned about parity, here's some things he might have said in the past.
In 2021 CFP:
You know, I really question whether we just played one of the best teams in the country. They tell me Vegas would've favored a lot of teams that are not in the playoff over Cincinnati. We are a pass heavy team now, we have struggled to run the football against the better defenses we have played. We came into this game vs. Cincinnati and shut our passing game down and just ran the football and won fairly easily, so I wonder if we are really getting the best teams in here.
In the 2015 playoff: I realize that Michigan State won a lot of games and beat some highly ranked teams at the time they played them. They also struggled many times against not so good teams. They are the only team that has made the playoff (still holds to today BTW) that has a negative in Net yards per play when adding the offensive NYPP and their defensive NYPP. So I have to wonder if they were really one of the best four teams.

Watch out, maybe what he is arguing for may benefit you in the future.

You can stop crying about Saban anytime you want.

Not gonna happen. Most of the bitching from non SEC football fans is SEC dominance. Win your games. No one is gonna care if you were 13 and arguing you should've been 12.

A “good” SEC team will go 8-0 or maybe 7-1 in OOC + the 4 games against the bottom 8/14 teams.
They will then need to go 2-2 in the four “toughest” SEC games each year.
1) Texas or Oklahoma
2) Three games vs:
Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, A&M, Auburn
10-2 likely gets in the playoff every year and 9-3 will be on the playoff bubble.
If you can’t go 2-2 vs the top 4 games on the SEC schedule, then you probably don’t deserve to be in the playoff. I think that’s reasonable, and a lot better than it used to be where you pretty much had to go undefeated to have a chance.

A reasonable assessment, though some of us have tougher OOC games scheduled over the next decade than others do. Some of our OOC games would be in that top half of the SEC if they were in the SEC.

Agreed. Texas has these the next 5 years.
2023 @Alabama
2024 @Michigan
2025 @Ohio State
2026 Ohio State
2027 Michigan
So yes, 9-3 or better will be hard for Texas, but if we are good, then we will get there. If we lose 4 games, then I can’t think of one good reason that we would belong in the playoff.
3 losses = bubble, and that’s fair
2 losses = likely in, also fair
eta: I don’t think that we would schedule those games today, but we needed them on the schedule at the time. It’s gonna be fun for the fans, but it will suck if that keeps us out.

Ouch.
I get the feeling OCC games are going to include more and more cupcakes when we go to 9 game conference schedule.

Alabama lost to the two best teams they played last season and neither of the teams they lost to made the playoffs. And saban really thinks bama deserved a shot?
