NCAA Tournament, always.

An actual SEC title probably only trumps a first round appearance to me. Give me a Round of 32 appearance over an SEC Chanpionship

Yes, I'd like to run the 800 meters and the 300-meter hurdles right before I run the first leg of the mile relay please

That a boy razorbacks, keep those expectations low. Just pretend it's football season.

Do you lose in the round of 32 in option 2? Asking for Arkansas specifically.

In order imo:

NCAA Tournament Champions (trophy, cutting nets)

NCAA Tournament Regional Champions (trophy, cutting nets)

SEC regular season champions (trophy, cutting nets)

SEC tournament champions (trophy, cutting nets)

Elite 8

Sweet 16

Round of 32

Round of 64

NIT Champions (trophy, cutting nets but … you know)

Both the Sweet 16 & Elite 8 are ahead of ANYTHING conference related.

FIFY

The sec tournament championship doesn’t hold a lot of weight to me because all it does is get you a spot in the dance, so it can’t hold more weight than just getting to the round of 64.

It's all subjective, but I put value on winning your conference's tournament in and of itself (i.e., independent of it getting you into the dance which in the SEC almost all of the time you are already in anyway). I think there is still a lot of meaning for the players/teams to finish the competition as champions.

You're selling them short.

2nd place in the league AND in the tourney.

That's worth a joint banner. Double runner up? Back to back runner up?

I would put the SEC tournament championship below anything in the NCAA tournament. The SEC tournament is cool but really only carries any weight if you needed the auto-bid to get into the NCAA tournament (like us in 2008).

I would also put the SEC regular season title below the Elite Eight and Sweet 16, but I do agree with having it above the tournament championship.

To me, the SEC regular season championship is an accomplishment in and of itself. You play 18 conference games from the first week of January to the first week of March, and regular season title is a legitimate championship that rightfully rewards the best team during the regular season, and it carries weight no matter what happens in the NCAA Tournament.

At the end of the day, college basketball is what happens in the big dance, and getting to the second weekend is more important than being the regular season champions. The SEC Tournament, though, is below both.

These are games that get counted against SOS. Many a team has shot themselves in and out of the Big Dance without winning it all.

Sure, 18 games are the acid test. When you say BAMA won the SEC Regular Season Championship this year, that is equal to the football program.

Champions of a three day Mickey Mouse tournament? No. Selection Sunday is just a couple hours later and everyone has already forgotten about it.

Well, for example, take Alabama. Let's say they trip up in the second round. Will their fans say "at least we won our first round game"?
Or would they say "we won the SEC regular season and SEC tourney"?

It just depends on the season you had. If you're having a shitty year (like LSU), make a magical run through the SEC tournament and get a bid, that would be a bigger deal than losing in the first round *this year*.

If you get beat in the semis in football and still win the SEC Championship do you accept the SEC ring and trophy?

I can't speak for Alabama fans, but if it were me, I would be thinking, "At least we had a stellar season, though it ended with dissapointment in the NCAA Tournament, which resulted in us being the SEC regular season champions." Because they won the SECT as well, I am sure that the SECT would also get folded into that.

Let's take another example: let's say that Texas A&M had beaten Alabama in the SEC Tournament final, and then still lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. I think that being SEC tournament champions would be of small consolation to the Aggies considering they were not the best team in the SEC during the season nor did they make any real noise in the NCAA Tournament.

That's why I put the regular season championship above the tournament championship, because you can always take pride in being the best team throughout the season, whereas the SEC Tournament is just an NCAA Tournament undercard, and if the NCAA Tournament doesn't go well no one cares about what happened in the SEC Tournament (again, unless you had a terrible season and you were just happy to make the tournament at all, and you did it by winning the SEC Tournament, like 2008 Georgia).
