Energy vampires
"“This has been the most enjoyable [non-playoff] bowl practice experience we have ever had -- I’ve ever had,” Saban said during his Sugar Bowl preview radio show. “The playoff teams are always ready to roll."
“But one of the things is -- all the blinking lights are gone. You know what I mean by blinking lights? When you look at a Christmas tree and one light is blinking, and that’s all you look at, is the blinking light? You don’t see the beauty of all the rest of it?
“Well, when you have guys on your team sometimes that -- I call them energy vampires -- you use all your energy on these guys, trying to get them to do what they’re supposed to do. Those are the kind of guys that don’t end up playing in bowl games, and don’t end up doing the best things and make the best choices and decisions for the team and all that, because they’ve got other motivates, which I’m not being critical of".

This years team felt a lot like the 2010 team. Both greatly under-achieved and got rid of some bad blood at year's end.

It’s always teams perceived to be garbage AF that win the championships man.
Like, 1998 vols without Peyton. The Pistons that one year that beat the Lakers in the early 2000s. 2007 LSU with Matt Flynn. The 2017 Alabama team that lost the whole effin defense from the year before but lucked into the playoff and went crazy with Clemson and Georgia.
It’s so depressing sometimes when you think about some of the talent and teams that end up losing sometimes in some years and the teams the year after that are just so disappointing to watch are the ones that end up winning it all. That 2017 team was an absolute eyesore in every regard except backup QB of all places and maybe D-line.

quote:The defense was extremely serviceable given the situations the offense was putting them in most of the time. Jalen was playing a bit scared and was basically in single read mode the whole season. Even with all the injury misfortune the D had, they gave the team a chance in every game. The Iron Bowl ended up being the game that mostly convinced me the coaches needed to go back to the drawing board with Jalen.

Yeah that 2017 defense was the top ranked defense in the country that year in terms of fewest yards, points, and ypp.

That’s absolutely right. The 2017 defense was so stacked that they had a ton of injuries and still were the best defense in college football that year.

When you have a terrible coach leading the offense.
A terrible coach leading the defense.
Neither one, motivating, chewing arse out during the game, as other's have. We're probably fortunate to be 10-2.
You'll see what appears to be an underachieving team with a Golding and O'Brien.

2017 was the most physically talented team Saban will ever have. It was just held back back by injuries at the LBer position, and Hurts' development was still lacking.
3 Starting NFL QBs
5 starting NFL RBs
6 Starting NFL WRs
3 Starting NFL TEs
3 Starting NFL tackles
3 Starting NFL guards
2 Starting NFL centers
That's just the offense, and most of those guys were solid contributors that year. Especially the youth in the NC against UGA.

The last truly elite defense we have had. Also the last with an elite coordinator.

Saban is just making excuses now.
Before the season started he said we didn't have "energy vampires" on this team.
Perhaps our new laid back approach to football is creating them.

It’s not like every team doesn’t have some guys that aren’t fully invested on it. Hell Hall and Billingsly played a major role in the national championship game last year on their way out the door. “Energy vampires” aren’t why this team underachieved so badly, the coaching staff is.

This is second year in a row he has used the word, "energy vampires."
He said the team has bought in 4th quarter, spring, summer and fall camp and yet he made a comment after the season.
Did something changed? Maybe after Tennessee game?

Saban just said this now:
Nick Saban said the Alabama players who entered the transfer portal were given the opportunity to play in the Sugar Bowl and didn't.

Yea this sounds akin to the comments he made last year when Hall and Billingsly were leaving.
My question is why not handle these “energy vampires” during the season? The way these comments have read the last two years is, it’s a positive they are now gone but it wasn’t a negative effect during the season. I don’t see how that’s possible.

Which contradicts the original point of this thread

Saban was still trying to coach these guys up. Still trying to motivate them, still trying to get them to be the best they can be. It's what good coaches do.

Saban seems glad to be rid of them or he is making excuses. Either way, Saban seems to not be the 'old Saban'....But one thing he better get right is the hires of his OC and DC. The entire "sunset career years" is riding on it, and right now he has his career in the hands of a loser and a drunk. He better make good decisions when the bowl is over.
Posted on 12/30/22 at 11:26 am to Shocco
Maybe the energy vampires WERE the OC and DC.
Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Saban could talk about tits and y’all would break it down into his offensive and defensive coordinators. Yall understand it doesn’t have to be one or the other? We can have bad coordinators and “energy vampires” too
