I think we can all agree a championship is possible with the offense Freeze and Monty will bring to the table.

Can we get a championship with Ron Roberts' defense? Will he be as successful or better than Ted Roof or Ellis Johnson?

Yes.

Roberts is much different scheme than both you listed. Pressure and fake pressure. Plays a mix of 4 man and 3 man fronts and mixes zone and man on the back end.

But like I have been saying 2025 before we know anything about top end. We have to get some real players in and get them coached up some.

The transfer portal will help for 2023 and 24 but my expectations even with good coaching is 6-6 next year, 8-4 in 2024… and we will see in 2025. Talent and scheme should be installed by then

Ellis Johnson cost Gus a natty. Hopefully Freeze doesn’t make that mistake.

The schemes have proven effective against equal competition. So, yes, in my mind this will be the biggest determinant of our success.

I don’t see it happening with Ashford. But hopefully we pull somebody in or he surprises.

2013 is not exactly common place though so I wouldn’t expect it.

What can I say? When it comes to Auburn football, I am almost always hopeful and assuming good things to come.

The difference between me and some others on here is I don't let it destroy my mood if things, in fact, don't go according to plan.

Totally agree. He'll get the best coaching of his career, but I cannot envision him leading this team to a NCG without significant improvements in his passing game.

There is one thing for sure. We will find out for sure what Ashford is made of with Freeze and Montgomery.

It's up to Freeze and his coaches now.

Ashford is light years better than Malik was at this point in their careers.

That means nothing other than I ain’t writing Ashford off this early with an actual QB developer on campus.

Now if Gus was still in Auburn - Ashford would never improve.

True. And from what I understand about the Aranda/Roberts defense is that it's pretty complex. Gotta get the dudes as usual, but gotta get some dudes that absorb a lot of information.

It can go great or be a complete disaster. Either way, I don't think we will be able to judge quickly. Look at Aranda's defense at LSU on that '19 team. They were very "meh", to downright bad early in that year. But once the season progressed and their guys got comfortable in the system, they were a good defense the start of November.

Gonna need some patience (which, I understand is crazy to ask for on fan message boards) to see it through.

Malik is overrated.

Never would’ve survived at Auburn even with Freeze coaching.

How do we actually know that? Malik barely saw the field. Ashford only did see the field because Harsin left himself with no other choice..

Should have hired Freeze (my pick) 2 years ago and we would be on the cusps of a natty next year.

Yes, offense will appease the peasants for 2 years (to the tune of 8-4), while this non splash staff (LOL) starts to recruit at a level that has not been seen in a long time (because you can do that at Auburn and previous coaches lacked the will to do so).

Then, "magically." we will start to make runs at championships, not really emphasizing who is in charge of the defense because offense dominates in today's game.
