Defending Saban

I don’t know how much longer he’s going to be on the sidelines, but this is some ridiculous nonsense about how horrible he’s done this year. And the run is over etc etc. Two excruciating road losses does not mean the sky is falling. It’s just dumb. It also shows what an insane bar he has set there where he has had only three seasons since 2008(!) with two or more regular season losses.
That means 12 out of the last 15 seasons with one or zero regular season losses in the SEC, not the Big 12 or ACC.
Just stop the nonsense. He is 183-21 since 2008 with 6 titles. Come talk to me when Alabama has gone 8-4 for the next 5 years.

This isn't why people think he's starting to slip. It's how they look. There are three things I've seen from them this year that have raised eyebrows:
1. They're average on the lines of scrimmage. Kicking everyone's arse on the line of scrimmage was a staple of Saban teams forever. They don't do that anymore.
2. Penalties, missed tackles, and general sloppiness. Saban's best teams had legendary discipline and never beat themselves. The penalty numbers over the last few years have been staggering.
3. The trash talking. 10 years ago, Will Anderson would have never made that stupid arse audacity comment because he knows he would have been running stadium steps until his tongue was dragging on the ground.

Noticed Young mouthing off to LSU bench after a TD.

It goes so far beyond the Ws and Ls though. We're still winning most of the games, but the team is completely out of control: undisciplined, unprepared, unmotivated. That's where the concern is

Surprised that isn't a meme yet

I said something similar on the Bama board. We haven't had maulers at guard like we used to, and we had interior DL guys going 1st or 2nd round every year or every other year and I just don't see those guys on this team outside of MAYBE Oatis eventually. We've recruited well enough at both positions. Since both of the problem areas have similar body types I wonder if our S&C has fallen off a bit for the bigger guys?

These go hand in hand. Also, Jermaine Burton would not be a member of the team after what happened at the UT game if it occured 4-5 years ago.

Noticed Young walking off ready to cry. Oh well.

Interesting that this was actually a feature of this class.
When they were being recruited, Saban felt like they had gotten a run of players that were talented but not motivated.
This group was therefore specifically targeted as guys who cared about winning.
Watching them play, I don't think that's the case.

The only thing that has happened is Saban has gotten a little more passive as he has gotten older. Which is what getting older normally does to people. He doesn't seem to inforce his will on players and coaches the way he did 5 or 6 years ago. He used to rule with an iron fist.

If Alabama doesn’t make the playoffs, it will interesting to see how many players skip the bowl game.

Going for two early in the 4th quarter was a huge mistake. I don't think you should go for two until late in the fourth (generally less than 5 minutes left).

It's the coaching clinic that's about to undo him. You can't underestimate just how fricking awful Bill O'Brien is.

There are always reasons for everything.
Saban's teams have been superior most seasons due to the highest level of recruiting and coaching.
Their recruiting has not slipped but sometimes recruits simply don't pan out as well as their recruiting rankings for a variety of reasons not the least of which is injuries.
In Bama's case I think they have relied too heavily on an injured Bryce Young.
The quality of the assistant coaches seems to be the main issue.
The defense is soft with poor tackling.
The offense lacks innovation and is way too reliant on the passing game with a short not fully recovered Young.
The OL isn't protecting Young well and they aren't rolling him out to relieve the pressure.
If the team finishes strong, then Saban might retain the OC but I expect him to fire his DC regardless.
If they lose to Ole Miss and are defeated in a bowl game then he might decide to just clean house.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

He needs some new lieutenants because BoB and Golding are obviously subpar, but I'm not sure if he has it in him. But I agree with you, compare the current staff to 2015 when you have Kirby and Lane as assistants.

I’d hate to be the guy to follow him at Bama.

He said "I know, I know"
