NOPE... I'll take a splash hire that gives us 2010s and 2017s with the ups and downs and puts fear into our rivals every time we play vs. consistent mediocrity.

Malzahn beat Saban more than any other SEC coach during his tenure. Bama fans knew anytime they played us that regardless of record, that game could go either way.

Ok, but Gus was not a splash hire. And he helped ruin the UGA rivalry.

I'll also add that outside of guys already possibly in the mix - like Deion and Lane, who are the splash candidates?

Because of turnover there aren't many BKs or Jimbos around right now. Gundy? I don't think that's very compelling. Chip Kelly? No.

Who is there to throw 12m/year at?

Rhule, and to that I say, maybe? He had a few good years at Baylor but I really don’t know how good of a coach and program builder he is.

Rhule would be a home run hire. He rebuilt 2 programs in college.
Here is what Rhule done in college. Temple was 4-7 year before Rhule took over. Rhule took over in 2013 at temple.
Under Rhule
Temple -
2013- 2-10
2014- 6-6
2015- 10-4
2016- 10-3

Baylor-
2017- 1-11
2018- 7-6
2019- 11-1

As you can see he improved 2 college football programs dramatically. And now with the portal he could turn Auburn around pretty quickly.

Cohen has a habit of hiring the 3rd or 4th option on his list..

Honestly, I think a lot of the interview for Rhule is whether he's interested or not.

Meaning, if a guy who is going to make bank from his fired NFL gig and doesn't have to do anything for the foreseeable future to live a life of luxury is nonetheless willing to go to Auburn and compete with the best and suck up to idiot 18 year olds - that's the type of psychopath we need.

I think most Auburn fans don't mind this reality. There is a big gulf between 7-5 and 12-0 that we can play in for a while and not get tired of it. Many of us just want to get back to performing at our historical level of around 15th or so, which probably means a lot of 9-4, 11-2 type of stuff. I'm good with that. I don't want to chase the top 3-4 programs in the country if it means we have to take huge swings and most of them will be misses.

Extremely sane take. What most college football fans don’t realize is that there is, as you said, a big gulf between being a mid-tier program and being an elite program. There are very few programs that can consistently go for elite all of the time. Alabama is probably the only one in the SEC. Other programs can be elite for periods of time, like UGA and Clemson right now, but eventually it’ll fade, as all elite eras do for 98% of college football programs. Auburn was there in the late 80s as well.

ESPN and big college football media and marketing wants fans to think that if their program is not in the CFP every year, then their program is behind. The truth is, for very solid but not blue blood historical programs like Auburn, Penn State, etc, there is nothing in this world wrong with being consistently top-15 and compete for a national championship once every 5 or 10 years.

The challenge for Auburn now is to find the guy to get them back there.

If Deion came he would bring his All American QB son along with any other kids he wanted. He is an elite recruiter. Look at all the Power 5 talent he has gotten while at JSU. What did you think he could do with the resources at Auburn that he don’t have at JSU.

At the end of the day I'd prefer a guy who is going to recruit at the highest level possible because on really talented teams you just need to put the pieces together in a given season to have a really special year. Teams with moderate talent just aren't going to win titles... period end of story no matter how well they are coached. Show me one team in the modern era say since 2000 that won a title with mediocre talent.

Malzahn was a high risk high reward guy not "splash" per se, because he'd barely head coached in college and had a completely unique offense as well. I'd bet his offense would still be good if there wasn't a rule change. People forget we were recruiting top 10 until the very end of Malzahn's tenure but he could never recruit Oline. Harsin inherited a very talented squad, which he proceeded to destroy.

I'd say Deion and Lane are the "splash" guys... Lane is kind of in the middle because he is more proven... Deion is very high risk high reward.
I think Freeze is "high risk high reward".
Someone like Grimes is more of a middle of the road guy but could have upside.

What do Auburn fans think of Matt Campbell as a possibility?

I love Matt Campbell and if he wanted to talk to Auburn (I don't think he would) then we're idiots if we don't.

But a lot of our fans coming off Harsin would be very hesitant.

Grimes would be a non splashy good hire. Deion would be as splashy as you can get, but I believe he would do well also.

Yeah bc he was at MSU which isn’t a primetime football school. Auburn is a step up, I think. Leach was an impressive hire though

If you're interested enough, you can go back through my post history and find I said the same thing about us in 2019. And it's working out well enough.

Pittman won't get us to our full potential. But he should leave a solid foundation for the next Petrino to have the opportunity to succeed.

My cousin's friend who lives in Pittsburgh and is neighbors with Mike Tomlin, says that Mike Tomlin wants to jump ship due to the poor future the Steelers have ahead and could possibly be eyeing the Auburn job due to the SEC being the place he wants to coach most. Tomlin could recruit better than anyone, all he would have to do is show his ring. Congrats Auburn fans, You got your guy.

Charles Huff. HC experience and had a chance to peak under the hood with Saban in Bama. Also worked with Joe Moorhead so knows what not to do.

Sonny Dykes?

He's done a phenomenal job at TCU in his first season.

Question is whether Auburn is a better job than TCU. Some people might not think so. Seriously.
