That was a quote from yesterday's game....welcome to the NIL.
Noww the other piece, the portal. People argued Saban did not want it because those 5 stars he had stacked like cordwood on the bench would transfer to play somewhere esle. He said it would be quite the opposite. Those great ones everyone missed on who went to lesser schools would shine and would enter the portal so the big schools could get a second bite at the apple....I think about that every time I see Gibbs taking one to the house.
Guy has mastered this new system, plucking guys like Gibbs and many others, while discarding to the portal ones that dont work out.
We have got some work to do, no AD, soon a coach vacancy, and boosters who will have forked out 140 million dollars for two coaches and a barber shop/recording studio.
We have a limited number of alumni who will put down big bucks solely for football, and we have REALLY tapped that well hard, not sure how much is left over for NIL.

Three of them are Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State, and the fourth is either Notre Dame or Texas.
As of this morning ND had the #4 class in the country, which was one (if not the primary) reason why they gave Freeman the job.

The concentration of talent into such a small number of schools will kill college football.
My son plays high school football in Georgia and even has 3 guys going to power 5 schools on his team one going to Clemson.
I remember in high school and the conversation on Monday was what happened in college football.
Sadly, the high school kids today don’t watch, pay attention to or really care about college football. I teach in a high school and when UGA played for and won the National Championship there was little talk and just a few kids in UGA gear that week.
Just like Newspapers died a slow death with the Boomers college football will die with generation X.
I’m not saying it won’t exist, but it will be regional and much smaller like hockey.

God, I hope so. We’ve allowed the NFL to turn a public school sport into their own, free farm system. I’ve considered getting a secondary degree from a D2 or D3 school just to have someone to cheer for on Saturdays. Thinking Samford here in Bham would be good.

It’s always been this way, but the top teams cycle in and out. Throughout CFB history, you’ve always had a few teams stacking talent before a coach leaves or gets hit with infractions or some other top team hires a splashy, innovative recruiter.
We’ve never had a CFB where more than 3-4 teams in a season have a legit shot at winning the NC.
Also, talent and facilities don’t always lead to success and definitely not sustained success. Look at Clemson. Or 3-loss A&M.
But I agree about the younger generation losing interest. Seems inevitable. The PAC 12 illustrates it.

The portal has basically instituted a one and done mentality similar to hoops. It is going to be very hard to develop talent. When a guy does improve he is out the door to a better school. The days of trying to,build a program by HS recruiting solid for 5 years are pretty much over. Just pay a bunch of free agents basically and have the best team. USC is a prime example.
