OL Recruiting 2016-Present

After watching the shitshow this weekend, I decided to do a little research into our OL recruiting. OL is the most glaring weakness of this team and has been for quite a while.
2016: (1) OL recruit on signing day. Brodarious Hamm
2017: (3) OL recruits. Calvin Ashley, Nick Brahms, Austin Troxell
2018: (2) OL recruits. Kameron Stutts and Jalil Irvin
2019: (3) OL recruits. Keiondre Jones, Justin Osborne, and Kamaar Bell
2020: (5) OL recruits. Kilian Zierer, Avery Jernigan, Brenden Coffey, Tate Johnson, and Jeremiah Wright
2021: (1) OL recruit. Colby Smith.
2022: (1) OL recruit. Eston Harris Jr.
This is gross mismanagement of the roster over TWO head coaching regimes. In fact, it's so fricking bad that it almost seems intentional. How have we allowed this to happen? OL is literally the most important position on the field offensively.

I was on the give-Harsin-a-chance train. I'm decidedly off that train now. First step in this rebuild job would have been to hit the portal and JUCO pools for OL talent and depth. We haven't done that and it shows.
I don't care if you put Joe Montana at QB. If he has less than 3 secs to get rid of the ball, you aren't going to be effective.

I think these coaches are so used to a system where they can't recruit OL/DL that they don't. Most of the big leading schools recruit hard for lineman which leaves the smaller schools with the scraps ie. Tulsa/Springdale HS and Arkansas State/ Boise State. They rely on the the skill players to pull them through while in the SEC those guys get met with equally/similar skilled counters then the trenches have to pull their part.
It's a small school mindset in a big school setting. This is why the coaching cycle needs to have roots in a big school so that they don't think in the ways of small school recruiting.

This should get this thread cooking.
Bo Nix was 6-2 behind this same offensive line last year prior to his injury in that game. He had thrown for 377 yard 2TD and 0 INTs. 5 straight touchdown drives. After beating Ole Miss and smoking Arkansas. We haven’t won a P5 game since the ankle break.
The prior year behind the same line went 6-4 in an entire SEC schedule.
Was Bo Nix the savior of the program that we never realized?
Bo Nix was 6-2 behind this same offensive line last year prior to his injury in that game. He had thrown for 377 yard 2TD and 0 INTs. 5 straight touchdown drives. After beating Ole Miss and smoking Arkansas. We haven’t won a P5 game since the ankle break.
The prior year behind the same line went 6-4 in an entire SEC schedule.

Oh, there's no doubt that his scrambling ability and our running game made a difference last year. In 2021, Tank and Hunter had a combined 32 carries for 165 yds. In 2022, Tank and Hunter had a combined 14 carries for 55 yds. Penn State 2021 vs 2022.
You think that effects a pass rush at all? I've never coached a down of football, but know that you have to run the ball to help protect your QB.

Add that all up and the deck was impossibly stacked against him. I honestly feel kinda bad for him I can't imagine this is how he wanted his college career to play out.

You are leaving out our abysmal offensive performance at TAMU, in which he was 10-21 for 153 yards and a pick, ended up with net negative yardage rushing due to 4 sacks, one of which resulted in a scoop-and-score for the only TD by either side.
Sure, a lot of that was due to serious OL issues - but that same TAMU defense was carved up by lesser teams and much less talented QBs.
Did we ever determine exactly when Bo broke his ankle vs MSU? Our offense completely disappeared midway through the 2nd quarter until the game was essentially over late in the 4th.
ETA: Just read the game recap on auburntigers.com, and it concluded with this quote from Harsin:

There are less offensive linemen than any other position. So unless you are winning some recruiting battles you will have a shortfall.

I haven’t seen our offense hold our own against a decent defense in a while. Bo, Stidham…. Probably 2017 at least.
