Is Bryce Young BETTER for a lack of Jameson Williams?

Not saying Bryce depended on Jameson, but I thought it was funny ESPN posted a highlight reel of Bryce a few months back and it was all of Jameson’s TDs pretty much

I think any Alabama fan here that had eyes could tell Bryce could’ve gotten us through that game with Jameson. It’s just that the other receivers completely let the team down. Not sure if it was lack of reps, letting the moment get to them etc. but Georgia was throwing every blitz imaginable at him and he was handling it pretty well for what its worth. And yeah his safety valve Metchie was gone too. That was also a factor. But it’s not like there weren’t several throws in pivotal moments that weren’t hitting these guys right in the hands. That one to I think Billingsley just stung. Oh well.

Yeah it’s the first game. Jermaine Burton certainly seems to stand out among the group, but not all world like Williams was from the first few snaps of the Miami game. I suppose we’ll get a better picture in the Arkansas game IMO. Texas is our first D1 big brand opponent but from what I’ve researched, their athletes compare similar to what Kirby said about Oregon post game. Sark will get ‘em there.

Anyway, I wanna see in the Arkansas game how the WR group handles poor OL play in case the OL hasn’t figured themselves out yet. What does the Prentice do when the Holden, Brooks AND Burton are off? What can they do to bail out their QB who is under similar fire from the Georgia game?

One of the reasons I’m looking forward to the Arkansas game the most this season just because of the WRs and how Bryce being under fire is handled.

Then again, watch it just be Bryce running around for 1500 yards this season and it doesn’t matter.

I don’t know if it’s that he’s better without Jamo, but rather that overall it looks like our WRs as a whole are better than last year (just my opinion). Bryce relied on Jamo because he was just so much better than everyone else, but this years group seems stronger overall.

Hard not to throw it to the speedster when he's wide open.

I did like the distribution of the football on Saturday and depth of the roster that got touches.

No.

Jameson Williams was a destroyer of coverages and made every other receiver and player on the offense better by forcing the DC to account for him with double coverage on every play.

No QB would be better without him.

I think Bryce in general will better this year. He will scramble more and produce more first downs. He will make the defense account for him with a spy which leaves the running lanes and passing lanes open more. If he can avoid injuries, we have a new dimension to the offense that we haven't had in a very long time.

Holy shite, this is dumb. Bryce has shown he can and will spread the ball around. Losing a 4.25 40 isn't a good thing. We had no receiver depth last year, and it showed by the end.

Now, I'm not saying we have depth this year. Sure we beat the shite out of Utah State. But they might not be anywhere as good as last year (see 2010 Bama and how they underperformed despite being talented). They might be amazing. I'm just not ready to swing by dick around screaming praises quite yet.

One thing I do think is much better about this group than last year's... We've gotten rid of the basket cases and prima donnas.

Nah. If we had Jameson with this current group we'd be much better.

I'd imagine if he had the choice, he'd take a healthy Jameson right now

That's not the question.

Is Bryce Young better when nor playing with a cheat code?

I think it forces HIM to do a lot more, which will make HIM better as a QB overall even if the offense overall would be better with Willaims, no doubt.

But, I may be looking at the question wrong myself.

I don't really think Jameson was a cheat code. Calvin Ridley was a cheat code that Sims could lock on for too long. DeVonta in 2020 was a cheat code (though Mac had no issues going other places).

Jameson was a solid reciever who was randomly explosive until the last 1/3 of the season when he really turned into an absolute star. I mean Metchie was as much his go to as Jameson. It wasn't like Bryce just locked on Jameson and if that wasn't there panicked and ran or lost his mind. He threw to Metchie, Bolden, Latu, Jase when he was healthy, etc. Jameson wasn't on the field for the 4th qtr against Auburn when Bryce went nuclear.

So, I guess I don't really think that Bryce needed multiple less explosive options. I think he'd be even better with more options like we have now PLUS an explosive deep threat. I never thought he used Jameson as some sort of crutch.

I agree and was being a bit tongue in cheek.

I think the combo of Metchies route running and ability to find a soft spot coupled with Williams speed was a great combo. If things broke down, Bryce only had to buy a few seconds and be on target for Williams after he got separation

Yep, agree. It's a shame we finally got everyone on the same page late in the year and then they got hurt and were off to the NFL.

I'm sorry but this is a dumb question. No QB or team gets better without Jameson Williams

Just went down a YouTube rabbit hole watching his highlights. He was so much fun to watch. This guy bailed us out last year. Can't believe he couldn't get on the field at Ohio State.

Were you turning the steaks when he missed Burton streaking wide open for a TD ?

Edit: at the time ironically i was thinking Young was worse for having Jameson because he got used to having a dude that could run down a patriot missile. Hes gonna have to learn that most WRs need you to drop it in the bucket.

Tired of hearing people reference Metchie as a possession receiver or a "security blanket." Metchie was a stone cold assassin and was an absolute force on the field. Dude was elite.

Metchie is top notch. I’ll never forget that absolute vicious hit he put on that Florida DB. I bet that guy still has nightmares about it

18/28 for 195 yds is not an exceptional day. He overthrew 2 tds and had an underthrow for another. Take off the crimson glasses for a moment..lol!!!

Now multiple that by two if he had played the entire game. 390 passing and 200 rushing. Not a bad days work. I know he played a little over a half, but his stats probably would have improved in the second half as their defense got worn down. not to mention 12 touchdowns (10 passing and two rushing). No crimson glasses needed.

Not bad but not great. If he hits the passes I mentioned, then it's a great day passing but he was not "on" Saturday. It was the first game with new receivers so I expect that will improve.
