Does UGA need the best defense in the country to win a title again?

You need a really good one, maybe not THE best. That goes for any team, not just UGA.

We couldn’t get it done without LSU luck in 2002 and 2007.
We couldn’t get it done without clutch qb play in 2017 and 2018.
We finally got both in 2021.

With the rules favoring offenses like they do today, you better have a freaking ELITE level defense to even have a shot if your offense isn't top 10 or so.
No slight to UGA but it also took teams like Ohio State, Alabama, and Clemson being "down" for it to come together.

The team that won the NC has been #1 in the nation in scoring defense 3 of the last 5 years.

Uga had top 5 offense and defense last year. Hopefully we can sustain that championship level play on both sides.

UGA needs more than that. Hell, they couldn’t even win the SEC last season.

They would need to be top 5 on D with a top 10 rushing offense. They are still essentially a Greg McElroy led Bama team. They are playing with one hand tied behind their back with Bennett as QB.
