Widespread Panic

If I'm going to listen to something ancient, it's got to be classic. Petty is cliche and generic. Not surprised he has been embraced by gator nation

They're an Athens band, but obviously rooted in the Shoals.

Patterson Hood is a great musician. That's about where the accolades stop

I'm not really a fan of REM either. To each their own.

I must admit their radio stuff is all I know. Perhaps the other songs are better but ive never known anyone who was like "check out this by Tom Petty" so all I know is the cheesy last dance with mary jane type of songs

Oh yea, you wouldn't be wrong there.

REM is absolutely a love it or hate it taste. My dad's favorite band of all time and moms most hated

Does Athens claim the Black Crowes too? I thought that’s where they got popular

You gotta give the Crowes to South Carolina. Athens had a great music scene in the 80s and 90s, especially if you liked alternative or prog rock but the Crowes don't belong on the list of Athens bands.
