Greatest Coach or Greatest Recruiter

If he is the greatest coach, just go coach the men up. With all the hate over how NIL works, it sounds as if he may be the greatest coach of a number 1 recruiting class only.

You're a fricking idiot if you don't think Nick Saban can coach.

quote:He can coach but only to a certain extent. He's not going to beat anyone with a team of average players. He's lost to the likes of UAB and UL Monroe with alot more talent. Coaches known for making things happen with lesser talent gives him all he can handle no matter how much more talent he has. Gus has done it, Freeze done it, Tuberville done it, etc. Unless they are having a garbage year they hung with him with 2,3, and 4 star guys. He didn't look GOAT until he started having #1 classes loaded with 5*s. Even a slight drop off in talent and someone blows him out. That's not the traits of a coach that wins off their coaching abilities.

I can think of once in Saban's tenure at Alabama when the Tide was blown out.

I think y'all are forgetting his defensive prowess.

Nick Saban took the only Alabama team in the last 50 years to not have a single player drafted (2007) to a 7-6 record with an OT loss to UGA and last minute loss to National Champion LSU. The next season he went 12-0 in the regular season with a bunch of Mike Shula players and Greg McElroy at QB.

Bama has been “blown out” once in 15 seasons.

Go watch a game or two.
He didn't coach those guys though. Just 'crooted them.

He’s a good coach but he’s also had every advantage you can imagine in cfb.
He didn’t have those advantages in the NFL and had a sub .500 record.

The college game is:
60% recruiting
20% development / hiring the right assistants (position coaches)
20% X’s and O’s / hiring the right coordinators

Stay on topic. I don't think anyone has ever accused Nick Saban of being a great NFL coach

"cant coach" /= "not the goat". reductive take. Saban is a good defensive mind, but when the playing field is level, he struggles immensely compared to scenarios in which it's clearly tilted in his favor.
Jimbo is the same on the offensive side of the ball. Innovator, etc, but overall not even close to the greatest Xs and Os guy to ever do it.
At the end of the day they're both hillbilly loudmouths with someone else's money in their pocket.

He also lost to UL Monroe and that 2008 team had 5* talent. He's a recruiter. If he was as good at coaching as you want to advertise then all these years he's had the most talent no one would have every touch any of his teams.

Is that the best you can come up with? So, why is he or his cult worried about other programs. Just go coach.

In College Station the game is paying recruits

He was pretty mediocre at Michigan State.

He's the all time GOAT in college football (from a non-gump) period. It's not an either/or thing. To be the GOAT, he had to be the best in coaching, recruiting, developing other coaches and cheatin. Miss out on any one and who knows how things turn out.

This thread is full of hilarious hot takes.

I’m not sure if people are aware, but college coaches (all of them at the SEC level) spend a lot more time evaluating talent and recruiting than they do actually coaching. It’s probably 60% of the job. If someone isn’t great at this, they will fail.

Nick Saban is a very good coach and the greatest ever when it comes to landing amateur athletes.
He is not an NFL level coach. Those guys are truly elite, but also don't have to recruit which is 90% of college ball. I don't think a single top college coach would be nearly as good in the NFL. Almost every top coach in college ball is a recruiter first and relies on younger/smarter staff for strategy. Or at least they should (my biggest beef with my coach).
