WOW!
quote:Former Lexmark CEO Marvin Mann leaves Samford $100 million.
Samford University today announced it will receive a gift of $100 million, the largest single gift ever made by a donor to a university in Alabama.
The gift is funded by the estate of Marvin Mann, a 1954 graduate of what was then known as Howard College, now Samford University. The college moved from East Lake to Homewood in 1957.
Mann began working for IBM in 1958, became CEO of its product division, and in 1991 became CEO of Lexmark, an IBM spinoff company...
Mann, 88, died March 19. According to Mann’s wishes, $95 million will go toward endowed student scholarships and $5 million will go to support the Frances Marlin Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership, which was established by Mann in 2008 in honor of his late wife, Frances

Glancing at it I thought it said university Of Alabama. I would absolutely have worded that differently. Why not just put Sanford university in Alabama or something?

Samford, like many private colleges, is unaffordable unless you're really rich or really poor. My kid got what sounded like a big scholarship amount...but then you do the EFC math and you'd still be looking at $100,000 minimum out of pocket or in loans. They need to fix that. Nice school, but not worth $45-50,000 a year.

The money will endow new scholarships worth $4 million per year.

They dodged a bullet. Multiple bullets, actually.

Holy shite. I had no idea Samford was that expensive.
That’s absurd.

Is their education on par with Vanderbilts or something?

I've owned 67 Chevelle SS, 70 SS, 71 SS, all big blocks. 69 and 70 Mach 1 Mustang with shaker induction. 67 Dodge RT. Various other 60's and early 70's muscle cars. I sold them all and bought a late model Shelby Mustang. I always loved the old cars and they have a lot of character, but performance wise, they can't touch the late model Shelby Mustangs. For that matter some of the Camaros are bad arse too, and Challenger has the Hellcat, which isn't cheap, but neither are the old cars right now. That will change if we hit a hard recession. Woe be unto those who buy in this current market.
Oh yeah, and the Shelby has AC, and it actually works!

Most of those schools hand out scholarships like candy. Most do not have high tuition to pay for operations, it is to eliminate the non-serious student. It makes the parents of those kids pay thru the nose. Samford and Birmingham Southern are good examples of that.

I think Bobby Bowden went here when it was in his East Lake neighborhood, I think he went to school there when it moved to Homewood too.
