quote:I liked Hudson and Thompson inserting Allsup between Mullins and Skipper last night. He threw 10 pitches and 9 of them were strikes. He's also got a 1.84 ERA on the season as well. I think he can really help the BP down the stretch. Allsup may be a guy that can take on Skipper's long relief role behind Bright on Saturdays because Bright can't seem to get through the lineup more than once.
Good start to the weekend. 2 more.

8-6 AU. 2-0 and going for the sweep tomorrow.
Bright pitched deeper into the game yesterday than his previous outing, but gave up the ghost and ended by giving up the 3 run bomb and was removed. When Butch was interviewed in the 4th (or 5th?) by the SEC Network he mentioned concentration and competitiveness w/r/t Bright. Implying that maybe Bright's issues are between his ears and he loses focus when he works deeper into games. Just thought it was an interesting comment.
I really hope Thompson and Hudson will look at Allsup for the Saturday "Skipper" role next week and moving forward. If he can throw strikes he's got great stuff. Sheehan reminds me of Horn coming off of Tommy John surgery three years ago. Sheehan just can't quite locate the ball like he needs to, to get outs consistently yet. It usually takes a year+ after TJ to really get back to normal. If Sheehan has a 6th year I hope he'll consider coming back because he was a frontline starter for a really good Notre Dame program for 2+ years. My only question with the pitching moves AU tried yesterday was bringing in Armstrong. He looked poor midweek and always seems too hyped-up for the first few batters, which is not a good trait for a spot reliever.

I agree with you about how Armstrong has looked for most of the year, but yesterday he did his job and the SS just flat out missed an easy soft line drive out. Felt terrible for him.

It wasn’t a soft liner by any stretch of the imagination, but Moore knows he should have caught it

Only explanation for it was that the runner shielded the ball and got on him too fast.

Sheesh that was close to being 2-2. Great play by Bello to rob USC of a home run. That USC player was pissed! Gonzalez seems a little more up in the strike zone today but he's still throwing a shutout going into the 7th.
Top 7th - Another 1-2-3 by Gonzalez. 6 outs in a row. Gregg Olsen on the SEC broadcast made the excellent point that with a 2-seam/sinker pitcher, you get more movement and sink the deeper you pitch in a game because of fatigue. Probably why Gonzalez can go so deep in his starts.
Top 8th - Gonzalez replaced by Carson Skipper after two soft hits, one on the empty side of the shift. Finished with 85 pitches. That's like Greg Maddux used to pitch. Strikeout by Skipper and double play to end the inning. 2-0 AU.
Top 9th - Burky in for Skipper. 1 hit in the inning and game over. 2-0 AU Final. SWEEP!

How close are we getting to hosting a regional?

If we can go at least 2-4 against UT and Arky the next two series, then at least 4-2 against UA and UK, that puts AU at 17-13. There's absolutely no way we don't host with that record. I think 15-15 would do it personally.

Huge sweep given what lays ahead the next two weekends. WDE

Yeah we needed this sweep. We are about to hit a buzzsaw. I’ll be thrilled if we can steal one from Tenn and Arkansas each.

Would be huge if we could go 3-3 against UT and Ark.
I think to host a regional we have to split those somehow and win the Bama series. I don’t think a .500 record in conference gets us a host. 18 wins probably assures a host 20 probably gets you a super.

We're still off from that. I think we need 18 total SEC wins including the conference tournament. Rest of the schedule thoughts:
0-3 @ UT
2-1 vs Arky
2-1 vs Bama
2-1 @ UK
That gets is to 17 wins and likely has us top 2 in the west which gets us a bye into double elimination in Hoover.
I'd agree that 20 conference wins likely has us in national seed conversations.

Hayden Mullins injured means we'll need to start Carson Skipper in future series. Not any drop off IMO, but we'll have to find a pitcher to plug into his 2-4 inning role. Auburn can't absorb injuries like the "haves" in the conference.

Injury on a pitch. Looked like an elbow as far as what he was favoring and wincing about. He tried to throw again while the trainers were on the mound and he couldn't go. Thompson is careful on arms so I doubt we'll see him again this year. SUCKS.

Probably inflammation of the LCL

Call me a nega barner but knowing Auburn baseball. We'll find the dumbest most heart breaking way possible to lose this game

Nah, just a spectacular crash and burn.
