I agree. Though we aren’t an elite program we’ve had past experiences that have made us fall in love with the big dance. Anything short of a trip there is a bad season.

It’s also great for recruiting because these kids value going to that tourney.

Yea - even if it's been a little while, Arkansas fans have tasted Final Fours in different decades and a national title. That certainly changes what the baseline expectation for a "successful season" is.

If you win your conference and lose in the first weekend I'd guess it is a conflict of emotions, like Petti has been saying.

I remember in 2002 (granted I was much more kid back then) I was through the moon when we won the title and depressed as hell when we lost to Kent State. But now we look back on that season pretty fondly. However, if we'd gone to 2 Elite 8s and won 3 more conference titles I doubt we'd think a whole lot about it.

In 2018, Virginia won the ACC regular season and conf. tourney, but will always be remembered as the the #1 seed that lost to the 16 seed. Granted they vindicated themselves the following year, but i guarantee Virginia fans dont look back at that particular year as their favorite year or success, because of the loss to UMBC in round 1.

Sweet 16 means your team gets another week of basketball to look forward to.

No doubt I’d take a regular season title over making the tournament and getting bounced the first weekend.

I’d take two weeks of March madness over anything in the regular season though.

Tennessee fan: With all the talent we have had this just makes me want to throw up. I can't even defend it anymore. Thought this year was going to be different because we were peaking at the right time

i think this sums up why i think the tourney is more important. Tennessee fans will give you a real-time glimpse into that after a dominant close to the regular season. successful season? sure. Would i trade our season for theirs? no.

And im not trying to flame or belittle, i just value tourney success a lot more

Yea I mean if you have that sort of facepalm in the NCAA Tournament the entire year is kind of tainted

but that's the point. being good enough to get seeded #2 is some form of success. Losing to Saint Peters in the first game, taints the whole season

As a fan I think there is a strong case for this. I was just telling the wife that despite my lessened expectations for this team one of the bummers is missing out on the second weekend, even if we were going to lose Friday. I've been a tournament fan my entire life so when Auburn isn't competing I can still enjoy it, but once we are and we're out it's a little tougher.

But is that better (from the Auburn program perspective) than getting an SEC title? Not sure. I don't think Arkansas fans are as concerned with building their program resume as Auburn or even Alabama are. Auburn needs to pile up accolades for credibility so that post-Bruce we're an attractive landing spot and continue the program growth. So titles, tourney runs, draft picks, etc. are all vital and valued to us.

No doubt, which is why I think we're all saying that it's in the details of how far do you have to go to kind of validate your regular season and make the whole thing a "good year".

Making an Elite 8/Final Four or, in turn, losing in the 1st round as a #1-3 seed makes the entire regular season kind of irrelevant.

Not everything is about how things look nationally.

I didn't mean to imply that conference titles don't matter. Auburn and Alabama's recent titles are indicative of their upward mobility. It's just that the national media is going to talk more about what they accomplished in the NCAAT and that will do far more for recruiting than a conference title.

I want to win everything, of course. It's just that the SECT is way down the list and the conference title is below almost any success in the NCAAT. I'd put it slightly above winning a first round game, even though the latter is usually much easier to do.

Edit: I should have gone with the 2nd game or the Sweet 16. It's actually close for me, but I do think that I'd rather win the conference title than only win 1 NCAAT game.

Agree - making the 2nd weekend feels like an accomplishment. If you get there you had a very good year. That's kind of the cutoff for me, too.

Also agree. Every tournament appearance, championship, sweet 16, elite 8, final four (hopefully for us at some point) is adding a block to a program resume that helps move it ahead of the glut of other SEC programs that we are all kind of in behind Kentucky and Arkansas (and Florida, technically, but I think everyone kind of looks at that as a Donovan thing and not a program thing).

Because for a whole lot of years we got none of those things - no conference titles, no tournament wins, no nothing. Just a bunch of bad or average seasons, NIT births and a handful of tournaments snuck into.

Regardless of where he ranks, I'm still happy to have Bruce at Auburn.

Good luck against the Zags

Some of us are good, at times.

Muss shows signs of being the best coach here in my lifetime. That includes Nolan. His commitment to studying film and finding weaknesses in his opponents are incredible.

This year is probably the best coaching job since he has been here. Whatever he did to get the transfers to buy in with a 10-5 record worked. They’ve gone 17-3 since.

Muss has never failed to win 20 games and has never missed the big Dance.

And he out-recruits y'all.
