Arik was a helluva TE at LSU his freshman year but wanted to be a WR. He thought with Pickens hurt he could come to UGA and make that happen. Could it be that he saw how good BB was and then bailed because he knew he couldn’t compete with him?

Brock was exactly the reason if you ask me. He thought he would show up and the spot was his but Napa thought different.

Imagine having Gilbert lining up outside though.

It's a nice theory that Bowers scared off Arik Gilbert but I don't think that's what happened. Arik was already having "issues" before it even became clear that Bowers was going to have such a huge impact. Also, Smart's comments were revealing. In particular, when the topic came up, Smart said something like: "Well, it's one thing to want to be a full time receiver. But you have show you can go out there and sustain."

The implication might have been that Gilbert didn't want to do some of the things that all WRs have to do, and also that maybe he wasn't really conditioned and sized for position? He was 6-5, 260 when he showed up. Might be a great hybrid like Bowers but a true, every down WR?

Anyway, it will be a nice comeback story if he gets his issues straightened out but we don't really need another TE and we're looking pretty stacked with WRs next year too.

Does anyone remember in Fall camp, someone asked CTM to describe Arik Gilbert. His answered seemed odd at the time, he compared him to Brock Bowers.

“ He's a special talent, because he's in the Brock Bowers mold in that he's athletic enough to play receiver but big enough to do some things on the interior,” Monken told reporters on Thursday. ... “He's a size match-up, he's a run-after-catch guy.”

It didn’t make sense at the time, but he was saying BB had quickly become the gold standard, the one that others would be judged against.

I don't remember that specific statement but I do remember there was a continual stream of reports out of pre-season practice about how this Bowers kid was a force. I think there was a Dawgnation article where some of the DBs were calling him a "beast" and saying that he's a real problem to cover...and fast as heck.

Did Arik ever actually even participate in a single practice? It didn't seem he was there for long.

Also, Bowers is willing to be a blocker when called for. He'll do the full job as TE. I don't think Arik wanted any part of being a TE.

This Gilbert kid has some problems and that is stating it nicely. When he was undetermined on where he was going to transfer, back and forth, I thought this guy is not ready for what it takes to play at this level. He has all the physical tools, per what has been written about him, but it is not all clicking in the other department.

Great question. I doubt we ever see him in a UGA uniform again. Just my opinion.
