Perhaps someone has already reviewed this, but the TV broadcast of the game listed ~8-10 players who sat out the bowl game. I'm uncertain who among these were really hurt and unable to play, but for those who sat the game out to "avoid injury", I fault these less than great Auburn men for letting their team and the Auburn faithful down. There was an equal likelihood that each of these "sit out players" would have been injured in any of the previous games as in the bowl game. So why not sit those games out too. If you are on scholarship at Auburn, then you should play in all games for which you are physically able to play. This should be a commitment in accepting an Auburn scholarship. Do these non-players lose their scholarships/room and board for the rest of the year? Credit to Smoke Monday and the other seniors/grad students who did play. They are the true Auburn Men, along with all of those who took the field and played for Auburn.

Well each scholarship is just for a year and if they are going pro the semester is over and Auburn is not paying anything for them. Yes you could get hurt in any game but why risk injury in a meaningless bowl game. What if McCreary got hurt and slipped from the 1st round. That is a huge risk for the Bham Bowl. These kids did there part and represented Auburn well.

I for one will not bash players who decide not to play in a bowl game in order to prepare for the NFL Draft and stay healthy. That is their choice and it may hurt them but who knows. We did have people missing that would have helped but hey it is their choice.

I think it's weak sauce, for sure. But so is the B'ham Bowl.

If you grow up broke and have a chance at taking care of your family for life, I ain't gonna fault you for not playing in the B'ham bowl.

I’m just a 20 something….errrr….older dude that loves Auburn. I used to be critical but I am not in their shoes and withhold any judgement.

It is actually better for guys to sit who are not coming back.

If you are not in the playoff, this is early look at spring to get tape on guys.

I would not be shocked IF the coaches recommended McCreary to sit.

The others are not high picks.

Call me old school but it's quitting on your teammates and the school that gave you the opportunity. I get it, the Bham Bowl sucks but it's one last chance to go out there and do your thing with your boys. Some guys love ball and some don't.

The only thing these men owe Auburn is to give 100% when they are in that uniform and represent the school and themselves well when they are in the public. No player that sat out this bowl game cost us the win unless I'm overlooking a more accurate quarterback or effective OL that chose not to play.

For some guys, it's bad advice to leave early for the NFL. For our guys predicted to get drafted, it was good advice for them to leave early and prepare for the biggest interview of their early careers. I'm sure their coaches and teammates supported that.

Guys have been sitting out of bowl games for years even if they went. I've always hated the bowl games where we play a team with no NFL talent and we had several NFL guys go half speed. Watch Brown against Minnesota...and ask yourself if he's going full speed. I don't fault them but sitting out IMO is better than showing up and going through the motions.

If they are going to sit, they will sit,

I’d rather see the next guy who really wants to play get a shot.

A bowl game is a mix of reward and preview. For underclassmen and coaches it’s more practices on tape and real game footage for the next man up.

McCreary made the right decision.

I would rather see a player sit than to give a half hearted effort in a meaningless game. These bowl games are only meant to be a reward for a successful season, basically a participation trophy. Now that we have a playoff these games mean even less. They should go ahead and expand the playoffs and move all other bowl games to preseason exhibition games for the next season. At least then everyone would have something to play for.

Another option would be to utilize the NIL rules and pay the players that participate in the games.

I actually disagree with this pretty strongly. Setting aside the injury risk for the NFL, for a game like this (pretty bad bowl game), I'm happy having the guys at #2 move to #1 and the #3 guy move off the scout team and start getting real reps.

I'd even let the guys going to the NFL stick around and get work in if they want on scout team. Having your receivers get 1x1s with an NFL corner is valuable and not replicable with normal scout team players.

Then why did we not take a look at D. Davis at QB?
Cause it is obvious TJF is not the answer.

I’m old school as well but in case you haven’t noticed new school has opened, and it’s not going back.

The game of college football has changed and more change will come.

A 6-6 team shouldn’t be in a bowl game anyway. I don’t fault a guy for not risking his livelihood to play in the Birmingham Bowl. You don’t see guys opting out of playoff games so these guys will play if it matters.

This is the way I feel about it as well. If we were in the play-offs and they sat, I would be fuming mad. If we were in a NY6 bowl, I'd prolly feel the same.

Anything less than NY6, I don't give a shite, tbh. It's just an exhibition, practice game meant to give younger guys playing time.

Note: I am not saying AU would have won even with a full roster, so this is not "excuse making" in any way.

Just an indication of how meaningless 'The Bowls' have become and why the playoff system needs to be expanded. As it sits now they're mostly extra practice's for the those teams which are already the best. Instead of being a looked for game and way to cap off a 12 year career.
