HOLY>>>>>> !!!!!!
Sam Pittman is looking to get paid.
University of Arkansas officials received an initial proposal for a reworked contract from UA head coach Sam Pittman’s representatives this week, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Pittman’s agent, Jimmy Sexton—the man who orchestrated a number of this coaching carousel’s biggest deals—has asked for a new 7-year, $50 million commitment.
Pittman is in his 2nd year as the Razorbacks coach. After a 3-7 campaign in 2020, the Razorbacks showed rapid improvement this season. UA sits at 8-4 ahead of an Outback Bowl matchup with Penn State.
Under his current contract, Pittman’s salary is set to increase from its initial starting point of $3 million per year to $3.75 million, per ADG’s Tom Murphy, thanks to benchmarks in his deal. Pittman received raises of $250,000 each for win Nos. 6, 7, and 8 this year. Pittman’s salary ranks 12th among the 13 SEC coaches at public institutions.
At $50 million minimum over 7 years, Pittman, who holds an 11-11 record in 2 years as a head coach, would get close to Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin’s $7.25 million/year figure under his own recently-reworked deal.

I mean have you seen the SEC contracts? He’s at the bottom of the pile right now and is trying to get to mid pack.
He’s being smart and knows he will get it just based on the turnaround alone.
I figure they will settle somewhere around 6.

I figured he would get a bump to 5-5.5. 7M for his upcoming 3rd year ever has a HC ? Damn.

It’s a smart move. Let him walk whose coming to replace him? We have some crazy potential on offense next year. You really want to walk away from that, risk transfer city, snd once again having to rebuild the whole thing again?

For future success, I am not sure if this is a "Smart" move...
Pittman hasn't proven enough for that type of cha ching yet... yet....
When he loses Odom, and Briles... who does he depend on, what will he bring in to replace those positions? I would not offer 6 million, Yet....
And if we go 6 million + what about our assistants? This is where we have lacked severely in the past...

If we agree to this, we will later regret it
Remember all that tough talk from Hunter when he first came in about coaching salaries being out of hand? He said he was going to do something about it. Time to belly up to the bar on that Hunter. Talk is cheap

Only a few truly elite HC's should be getting huge money but when alums of Mich State give Mel Tucker a $100 mil contract. Insanity.
I know what having a successful football program means to the University, enrollment, economy of Fay and surrounding areas, etc but we are way behind these other places who have invested in it the past 5-10 years.
For the longest time I've griped about our assistant coach $$ pool being where we should invest if we are serious about our program.
$5.025 mil is our current assistant coach pool with Odom making $1.75 mil and Briles making over $1 mil.
It actually lowered last year when Brad Davis, Stepp, LeBlanc, Cooper, Rhoades were replaced by Kennedy, Guiton, Ashley, Loggains and Scherer. It was $5.225 mil the year before.
Places like Clemson were at $8.5 and A&M just under $8 mil.

What is hurting Sam is his lack of history as a head coach. Unlike some of the other coaches in the SEC, he doesn't have as much leverage. It would be too much at 7 million for someone who hasn't accomplished anything significant. He has done a lot but he doesn't need to paid on same level as someone like Fisher or Saban.
I would get him up to 5 to 5.5 million at most. If he ends up at 6 million or more then I will have to change my expectations 8-4 or better each year. The problem is he could be overpaid and the next three years go 5-7, 6-6 or 7-5 at 7 million a year. That would be Aggie or Jeff Long dumbass contract negotiating.

No way he should get more than 5 years. 5 years at 6 would be fine.

Issue is Hunter by himself can't change the market prices or coaching salaries without tanking our program.
I'm for more incentives for consistent yearly success.

I’d rather we pay Briles and Odom first. Specifically Briles.

We need more money for assistants. If Sam gets 6 million a year then I guess that doesn't leave enough money for good assistants.

agree wholeheartedly, He always seems to speak highly of paying assistants, keeping the coordinators happy. THis needs to happen yesterday.
And how is this done, if we also pay him 6-7 million? I honestly think he needs to chill a bit, go up to 5million now but settle down and prove something more first.

"Pay me what you want, I just want to coach the Hogs."
Lasted all of 2 years.
I love Pittman but don't say shite like that and turn around and hire Sexton. Really bad taste in my mouth over this.

And you know HY has to be absolutely thrilled to be working through Sexton for contract negotiations again.

You gotta pay to play. We honestly go extremely lucky that Pittman wasn’t a complete dumpster fire of a hire, and now that he’s proven to be somewhat successful he is looking to get somewhat paid. If we want to be able to compete in big time college football we have to be willing to spend the money. Everybody always talks about how we can’t compete because lack of home grown talent but the truth is we can’t compete because we refuse to do what is necessary. Refuse to spend big NIL money, refuse to pay at a top tier rate, refuse to spend more on assistants. How is it that the state Louisiana can go bankrupt but they still find a way to make LSU one of the most high paying football jobs in the country? Because they put an emphasis on it. As long as Pittman is serious about paying his coordinators enough to stick around I’m all for the man getting his money. I’d say 7 is a little high right now but 5 or 6 sounds about right

quote:He's not looking to get "somewhat paid". He's trying to get a contract that's equal with KIRBY SMART. 7m/yr would have put him in the top 10 nationally this year.
he is looking to get somewhat paid
I love Pittman but this is ridiculous. He's been a head coach for 2 years and has one winning record yet demands the salary of the head coach of a perennial national title contender.

This right here folks. What happens if we sign him a big contract and we flop in a bowl game without Burks? If he wants a big contract he also is asking for the pressure of being a contender. I wouldn't want that. Especially given next year we're losing some important contributors
