Regarding the buyout, it has to be approved on many levels. Donors, board, pres, etc. His buyout wasn't slipped by anyone and they all had to approve.
From the USA Today article I linked in another thread:
quote:

A few weeks after the final signature was added to Malzahn's contract, Auburn's board of trustees approved a series of revisions to its bylaws, including a new clause that requires the university president to report "the total financial exposure and buyout risk" of coaching contracts when presenting the annual budget. The revised bylaws, which had been discussed at a November workshop, also reiterate in three separate places that any non-faculty contract or extension with a buyout provision must be approved by the full board, or its designees. (Athletics contracts, for example, require approval from only three board members, including the lead trustee for athletics.)
So in this case, “they” was Leath, three trustees, and to a lesser extent Jacobs (whom I believe still had veto power despite his shorttimer status).

Yes. Thanks for linking. People act like it was a midnight deal struck between Gus/Jacobs, but it was vetted by our admins and board too.

Well, not exactly. It was apparently pushed by Leath and Raymon Harbert, approved by Quentin Riggins and only one other trustee (out of 16 total), and signed off on by Jacobs.

I seriously doubt the rest of the trustees and admins had any input whatsoever, much less 'vetting' power.

Sounds like something yall hate about Gus

and forced us to Auburn Jesus the end of the game

Jesus counts Sandman. Still a "W".

He is playing in a inferior league and does not face a 10th of the competition Auburn does. Not in games or recruiting. Wanting to "throw the bank" at him to come into the hot seat and play the hardest schedule in the country with the hardest recruiting competition is just silly. Let him prove himself first or we could be in the same situation as we are now with the bank thrown at another "I dont know"

I'm a Texans fan and I WOULD NOT want him. He's screwed over the Texans for YEARS with his mismanagement.
Now can we just fire Gus please? It's time to move on

Here's the problem: the nature of this conference dictates that apart from a complete fluke like Saban jumping back from the NFL or Urban Meyer coming out of retirement, every single coach you hire is going to be an "I don't know" in some regard. You're either hiring a current head coach from a lesser conference like you just stated, a hotshot coordinator/assistant who's never been a head coach at all, or less routinely an NFL coordinator or assistant (wherein the risk is whether or not they are willing or capable to handle the recruiting/coddling required to succeed at the college level). If your expectation is that you're not going to make a move until the perfect candidate descends from the skies, then you may as well just give Gus a lifetime contract.

I have no idea if Cristobal is "the guy", but he's also considerably more proven than both Chizik and Malzahn were when we hired them. Like by a lot. Given how pathetically pedestrian Gus is, its hard to imagine that at worst you don't get a similar result out of Cristobal. And he's already proven to be a hell of a lot more dangerous a recruiter than Gus is. Maybe you guys don't remember or weren't aware, but Gus was seen as a complete liability recruiter coming into this job because he was a weirdo/goofball who had no network. Guys like Garner and D.Craig were brought in by people above Gus to at least ensure that we had a few "ace" recruiters on staff. If it was up to Gus, he literally would have just brought his Arkansas State coaching staff with him to Auburn. Thats not a joke or an exaggeration.

Also didn't even know but more on Jeff Grimes. Someone will snatch him up soon. His BYU offense through 3 games leads the nation in points per game and yards per game and I think time of possession

I think my issue is, if 12-2 in the PAC-12 isn’t “proving yourself,” what context is that we could conceivably hire someone out of?

Sandman I get what you are saying but I also undestand the proving himself statement as well.

I think Cristobal is a high ceiling kind of guy and as mentioned earlier would be the first I would go after if I were looking for a new coach of ones I think could possibly come and be a fit as well but he has not been through the grind of 4-5 games a year that are tossup games to see how he handles the pressure. I can see where the timeout and all that in the game against us cost his team.

Could he handle the pressure of going against LSU, bama, uga every year and sprinkle in some aTm, UF, UTk and always one of the lower level teams in the conference is always having their 1 out of every 10 year run to 9 wins... We wouldn't know if he can handle that but that would be for every coach we hire.

At the end of the day, there are more than a 100
Men who could average 8 wins at Auburn.

We should not have paid premium price for average results.

Lesson learned. No more outrageous contracts.

Jay Jacobs is not AD or Rhett would already have a contract.

I would talk to Cristobal. Maybe James Franklin.
