Is there a length of time in play?

I like the idea of “earning” the right to wear 2,7,34, and 88.

Criteria would be given to a QB to have an all SEC season before wearing.

For 34, RB would earn it will all SEC season.
Same for 88 WR.

Never should be worn again any of those numbers. Once we get to where we have 10-12 numbers retired maybe reconsider

What IF wearing 34 could have got us a Najee Harris level back?

What if wearing 88 could get us a Calvin Johnson talent at wideout?

I think having numbers retired is not as good a way to honor a player than having the players have to earn the number.

Just an opinion.

Reality is the numbers are retired.
I just think rosters are so big that retiring numbers is impractical. Finding a way to honor a legend without retiring the number may be something to consider.

This makes no sense. The NFL retires numbers. They also designate numbers based on position. That’s why you don’t see an offensive lineman wearing a single digit number.

Retire #2 and hang it in the stadium.

Hot take - I never understood why 88 was retired given the other two were heisman winners. We’ve had other All-Americans who didn’t get their numbers retired. What’s the difference? Stat wise, TB was definitely the best receiver we’ve ever had but I still don’t totally get it.

I agree, although he does have a big azz statue which is just as good or better.

And I think 1 option is if we want to retire a jersey, then if a player comes along and is on the path to greatness at that position, and they wish to wear the retired jersey #, then it is up to the player who's number is retired to allow it to be worn...

None of them should be retired.

If it wasn't for Terry Beasley, Pat Sullivan wouldn't have won the Heisman. I don't think you have another Heisman winner in history that was so connected to another individual on his team as Sullivan to Beasley was.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but Beasley, Sullivan, and Bo did what they did on the field for Auburn for multiple years. Cam was only there for one (amazing, unforgettable, wouldn't trade it for anything) season. I can see not issuing the #2 again for a good long while, but to officially retire a number and "hang it in the rafters" should be reserved for players who are on the field for more than one season.

Edited for the correct Beasley.

Yeah but Cam also did what none of them could do which is bring home a national championship.

I am against retiring numbers, there are other ways to honor them. Maybe retire it as long as they are alive. Not comparing to Bama, but they do not retire numbers. do other SEC schools do that?

You’re mixing up your Beasleys, sir.

This sort of argument could be made for a lot of superstars. But I see your point.

I disagree on the “more than one year” thing. You could argue Cam did more in one season than either of those other three did in all their years here. None of them brought us a Natty. I like Bo more than Cam but I’m saying you can’t deny he took us to the very top while the other guys didn’t.

Also, he transferred in from juco so he had less eligibility left for us in the first place.

Completely different situation because NFL rosters are bare bones compared to college.

They just had to add the number 0, and we still have multiple repeats.

Thank you. I fixed it.

It doesn't help that Fred playing when I was first at AU. and I think playing at the same time Pat Sullivan Jr. was a third string QB.

I agree that Cam did what none of the others did with the Natty. But I guess my thinking is that the official jersey retirement should be a career achievement type of award.
