I've seen quite a few claims (mainly by "insiders" on X) that the contract with the new coach has been signed. We can all question their veracity, but they do all share the same ambiguity: they don't say who it is. I just find that strange.

I actually find that refreshing. If they do know, then it shows respect for the new Coach, the AD, and the process. They’re not just throwing names out there, hoping to be right.

despite claims to the contrary, very few posters here have proclaimed Sumrall a slam dunk homerun type hire

he does, however, have a lot of upside, and frankly he will be probably be one of the few AU HC in my lifetime who doesn’t seem to have any negatives, at least based on the interviews i’ve seen with him and the way others in the profession have spoken about him

as anyone who’s read any of my posts knows, i was completely against the Freezus hire from long before he even became a serious candidate for the job - well, Sumrall appears to be the polar opposite of Freezus in practically every aspect

if he is indeed our next HC, i will feel upbeat about our football future for the first time since 1/8/14

I agree. I am completely upbeat and fine with Sumrall if he is the guy.

I was nervous but hopeful when Harsin was hired. I was against Freeze from the start. I know there are bigger names out there, but Sumrall gives me the opposite feels from when Freeze was hired and for that I am happy.

Agreed. It may not be a splashy hire with a name like Jimbo or Chip Kelly, but he might just be a better coach.

I like that he’s never been fired from a job. I like his hard nosed, disciplined coach.

It’s been said before, but he reminds me of Pat Dye.

I don't have a problem with Summral. I do however think it's going to be more of a long-term turnaround under him. Probably a few years of 6 or 7 wins before he can put a solid staff together and get his traction in recruiting.

That won't work. He will NOT get a fair shot with this fanbase coming off of 5 losing seasons (unless we pull out the iron bowl). He does NOT have a long-term turnaround if he keeps this roster. This team could've and should've won 8 games this year. Freeze was just an idiot abomination. Keep Atkins, Coleman, and several other key pieces and you can inspire support with WINS next year. Don't....... and we'll be the new Tennessee. We'll see what happens and he has my support if hired.

And that is the problem. Hopefully it doesn’t take more than a couple of seasons to get it going.

It should not take anyone a long time. We are set up much better than we were a few years ago. Auburn is not a rebuild situation anymore. As bad as things were this year, we win Saturday and that is 6-6 and should have been 2-3 games better at least. New coach gets one year in my book next year to get their footing and then I would expect a really good year in year 2.

Year 2 is what tells the tale in today's college football. You know what kind of a coach you have in Year 2.

By the way everyone, what the hell is happening? I went to a Dr appt and on the way back home I'm listening to Jox radio and they are saying that Durkin is the leading candidate and they expect an announcement either Friday or Sunday.

I thought Sumrall was in the bag. What is happening?

Not arguing, but genuinely wondering what makes you think it would take a long time to turn things around? The NIL money is there to maintain a large portion of the roster/ fill in gaps. Sumrall did well in the portal relative to Tulane's position in CFB. As a coach in the SEC he was a solid recruiter.

If Barfield had had her out recruiting, he might have had a better record than he did.

Looks like Arkansas just hired Golesh. Pretty decent hire for them.

That is a good hire. I am a little bit jealous. We'll see what comes out in the wash with all these Sunbelt and AAC coaches next year. I think that guy from North Texas is going to Okie St.

Those three knuckleheads on the midday show. Maybe I heard it wrong, but it didn't sound like rumor like we have been hearing, they were talking about it like everyone was talking about it. Maybe not the case, maybe same old rumors.

the fanbase is not involved in whether he succeeds or fails - they will fill J-H win or lose, we saw that in 2021 and again this year

so long as he has the backing of the AD and the boosters he’ll be fine until year 4 at least, no matter what his record

of course he could be a Butch Jones and fool everyone with decent seasons in years 3 and 4 then have it fall apart

there are no risk-free hires out there this cycle
