What exactly does "getting our edge back" mean?

"No doubt."
"Great week of practice...."
"Day to / by day..."
I think most of us know what these expressions generally mean.
Today again, Gus said of JJ "We know he's talented. It's just a matter of getting out there in practice and kind of getting that edge back and doing the things he knows he can do."
For coaches, receivers, QBs, both lines and all other unit groups, what is CGM really talking about when he says "get our edge back." What and where is our friggin' edge?
Can anyone remember any time Les or Bert or CSS or Saban or any other SEC coach continued to talk about "getting their edge('s) back."
Looking forward to no tight game or loss this weekend. Have a great weekend everyone.

Clearly the kid is rattled. He's pressing and/or panicking in the pocket and making bad decisions with terrible mechanics. He didn't look like this last year or in the Spring Game so I can only assume that this is a recent development.
I have a ton of questions for the coaches about JJ. Did he look this bad in practice? What have they been doing to try to correct it? Is this all on JJ or is it coaching, play calling, WRs?
We were told by Gus all last year that JJ would start for most teams in our league. Gus sent JJ to SEC Media Days for frick's sake! How do you go from that, to this?

The QB position is absolutely one position you can't judge till you see them in true game pressure over a sustained period. The indecision of the coaches is more a reflection of the unusual nature of the problem than some sign that Gus suddenly can't coach.
The coaches know JJ's true potential and SW's at this point. The posturing IMO is because they believe "if" JJ could figure it out he is significantly better than SW. What I don't believe is Gus plays favorites, etc...

Question about JJ...
Do you truly think it was impossible to not see his substantial in-game meltdown based on his performance in practice?
I ask because I don't think this has really ever happened to a QB. Maybe Kenny Hill last year, but his expectations were zero going into last season.

Another problem with JJ is the offense his high school team ran, Carver here in Montgomery, most all of the pass plays on where to throw and who to throw too we all predetermined before the ball was even snapped. There were not a lot of instances where he did not have to look at the defense and try to make decisions and go through progressions. Everybody knows he has a cannon of a arm but you still have to be able to use your head being a SEC qb and smarts is another thing he is missing on top of all that.

Our offense is no different. Gus tells him where to throw it everything is predetermined.

It must mean we are going to start JJ and see exactly how far he can throw the ball backwards Cause that is where we are headed next week.
