Sumrall isn't directly represented by Sexton.
But also - there is a HUGE difference between using Auburn to allegedly get a bigger deal out of Ole Miss versus what? Leveraging Auburn for more money ay Tulane? Sumrall would obviously leave Tulane for Auburn - that isn't in any way comparable to Cristobal at Oregon or Kiffin at Ole Miss.

and before anyone says “Sumrall would definitely choose AU over OM”, remember we still don’t officially have an opening, and there would likely be pressure from our PTB to keep Freezus if forced to make a quick decision

You're just looking for things to spook yourself.
Florida isn't hiring Sumrall after Napier, and Sumrall is at best going to be a 2nd or 3rd option at LSU, which means that they would need to strike out elsewhere first (which will take time). LSU is also going to look at multiple P4 head coaches.
If Auburn actually wants Sumrall, then timing is in their favor. For example, if Kiffin actually does end up leaving Ole Miss it will be after their likely playoff run which is weeks after the regular season ends. That gives Auburn enough time to make Sumrall sign on before the Ole Miss job would even theoretically be open. If Auburn offers Sumrall the job, is he going to turn around and say "actually I want to wait to see if maybe Ole Miss ends up having an opening weeks from now"? Or is he going to say: "well actually I'd like to wait and see if LSU is going to miss on 2-3+ guys before me because I may get a call then"?
Sure, those are all possibilities...but not very realistic ones.
And yes, we don't have an opening yet so this is moot. Although there have been people claiming to be close to Sumrall's family that have indicated that we have already reached out to him.

Also worth taking into account, even if we fired Hugh last week, we wouldn't have anybody hired right now. Anyone we are going after isn't going to want that getting out until after their season. So, we would still be sitting here in the same boat, only difference is that we as fans would know for certain we are looking for a new coach. I know we've at least talked with his people and he with ours. Don't know what will happen the rest of the way, but there has been mutual interest by both parties and some wheels are at least in motion. Now, what happens if Hugh somehow wins out or goes 3-1 or something? God help us

Word is Kentucky wants him too. Its pretty well known they will let him go after the season.

I kinda think that Cohen and Hugh have a plan to let him retire after the season for “medical reasons.” And, because there are so many programs jockeying for coaches, that he’ll have one locked up before the end of the season.

That would be the ideal scenario.
Yeah, the same moron who hired Hugh is still in charge. There is 0% chance that he's looking for a potential Hugh successor. He still thinks we're close.

And this is why we are in such a lose/lose scenario. I cannot hope for AU to lose games, but I also do not want to be stuck with Mr. "We are close."

I can understand your thinking but LSU will not go after anyone in their state. Call it whatever but their boosters don't look at it that way.
If LSU or UF go after Kiffin then they will make him the highest paid Coach which will have others demand more thus jumping up the salary chain.
UF might go after Sumrall but I am not sure what they plan. I used to know a Bull Gator or two that had inside info. I haven't heard anything other than Kiffin.
I think we need to move on this year or we will be behind. What happens next year? We drop him early? Who else will be shedding their coaches? MS State? And if the guy we want this year is gone?
we could go after a smaller school coach who is consistent and hungry. Exciting offense. We have a good D built & may keep it who knows.
If you know your car won't get you back and forth to work consistently & may leave you stranded do you go and replace it or do you keep patching?
Now replace your car with Freeze. We struggle on Offense which he is supposed to be a Guru & QB whisper champ. So far I haven't seen it. We can't always win games we should be winning...

Don’t worry, he’ll f*ck it up.

Meta, you have been speaking very convincingly and authoritatively the last few weeks. Are you in the know? Or just have strong intuition and debate skills?

It means nothing but have heard it from two different Auburn groups today. These people are the same as you and I, and I would not say they are connected, but maybe they know some people who are.
Hugh is gone at years end and Sumrall is onboard to come. I have a hard time believing it's actually that cut and dry right now.
Additionally, I think UF or LSU could easily cuck us between now and then if they want him.

Either he's distracted by assembling his staff or we need to #StopSumrall

If the excuse is that they are young and do some stupid crap then that is interesting as I haven't done extensive look at their starters. However, being disciplined is part of coaching.
I do think they have less false starts than we do...LOL
They did beat Duke & Northwestern this year...

I dont think Sumrall has the same luster or price tag as he did hours ago.
But he was probably distracted all week.
At this point I can't defend Sumrall if someone wants to roast possibly hiring hire but what he has done at Troy and Tulane isnt nothing.

Oh I agree, he has done a tremendous job. You know his team has been hearing his name mentioned all week with numerous jobs. They are distracted I imagine.
UTSA's Defense has stepped it up tonight. I like watching the Tue-Fri games as you can see some good or not so good football.
I haven't looked into Sumrall's background as much but if we miss on him I would probably be happy with Chesney out of JMU

I remember when James Madison was a running joke where banned Auburns fans congregated on James Madison's 247 boards and went unnoticed as there was very little activity there.
They have been really good ever since then. Makes you wonder...
As always I welcome solid football coaches but they have to recruit like their job depends on it.

I would be happier than I am now and when we hired freeze if we went for Sumrall or Chesney. And we need to hire JMU’s AD. Dude has made some stellar football hires. Yeah it’s JMU but you gotta start somewhere.
I’ll probably eat my words. I’m just tired of the same old dance and song.

He has been solid on his last 3-4 hires.
They have done a good job there. I think he does go to the smaller leagues and figures out the winners & plucks them up.
