It's all relative. I liked his big moments and hold them tender, while also knowing he had to go. Either way at the end of the day he is closer to our top modern coach than to Harsin.

Indeed. We seem to be emerging from the potato famine. It is encouraging and I hope this season is the best our Tigers have had in years

Mediocrity under Gus led a lot of the fan base to call for him to be fired. They had no way of knowing that the situation was about to get much worse. Be careful what you wish for.
The fact that Harsin was a terrible hire doesn’t mean Gus shouldn’t have been fired.

Agreed. Still it's interesting to see after the following coach showed everyone what the bottom actually looks like that the perspective on Gus hasnt rebounded at least a little.

Gus was a good guy but he should have been fired years before he actually was.
He performed well in contract years and went right back to mediocrity once that new contract was signed and that is a fact.
I am over the moon with the Hugh Freeze hire and the effort that man puts into building a program. We haven’t had this in some time.

We need to slow down on Freeze. He’s recruiting his arse off and that’s a very good thing but he also has to do the other half of his job. Jury is still out on that.

I think his biggest issue was he ran an offensive system that depended on mature veterans lining the roster. If he was one or two key positions short the whole year became off-years. He beat Bama in 2019 but he was a QB short of something magical. 2017 was really his last season of having all the pieces. Stidham, slayton, ryan davis, and so on.
I dont know why it was so hard on him to prepare to replace. If you cant replace then you have to scrap the system before you get scrapped yourself.

I agree with your whole assessment and agree with Jang on how Gus loved Auburn and represented well.

I will always love Gus and Coach Tubs. Both were net positives to Auburn and gave us some great memories. Comparing the two tenures though I would take Tubs.
From ‘00-‘06 we were a truly consistent threat in the West and the only year we for sure underperformed was 2003. Incredible defenses and some fun offensive talent. Granted, those offenses were occasionally maddening to watch. As was the Tubershell defense.
In the Tuberville era, I genuinely felt like we had a chance in every single game before ‘07, even on the lesser talented teams. For Gus there were 2-3 games per year we would go into every year that we felt like had no prayer before the game, and the game only proved it.
I guess on the flip side.. with a couple of exceptions, Gus usually handled business against lesser opponents. Feels like he didn’t have as many slip ups akin to ‘02 or ‘06 Arky or ‘07 USF

He had one of the worst years coaching on the field that we have seen in recent years last year .
He is buying up players well right now but his on field coaching was atrocious last year. He is known for that in the past as well. Just getting the guys here is part of the job. Lets see if he can actually coach the games before we build a statue
I like his shopping efforts right now. Lets hope he keeps that rolling and does not repeat what he did last year

If we can beat 2 out of OU, GA, TAMU, Missouri, Bama, I would say Freeze has learnt how to use his weapons.
